Overall Thoughts:
Not all the best mattress toppers are created equally. GhostBed is well-known for manufacturing the best mattress for sleepers with back pain and their memory foam mattress toppers don't disappoint. They're specially designed to relieve pain while you sleep. Unlike other options, this memory foam mattress topper has different zones that cradle your body differently in each area. This means the zone designed for your back is uniquely purposed to relieve back pain, whereas the area around your shoulders and feet are slightly different, designed specifically for those areas.
As one of the best mattress toppers out there, Ghostbed is thick and excellently sleeps cool. It's 3", which is more than enough to make a dramatic difference in how your mattress feels. Since it's infused with gel, it doesn't get hot like traditional memory foam toppers do. Compared to many memory foam mattress toppers, it takes the design of an egg crate mattress topper, it's actually a very high quality, dense material that weighs as much as some competitors mattresses that use cheap memory foam (33lbs).
You also get a mattress protector included in the package this memory foam topper comes in. Function of the protector is to keep the mattress topper in place, and also doubles as a waterproof layer to help protect your mattress topper, as well as your mattress.
GhostBed is a family owned company known for their pain relieving sleep products. GhostBed was created when the owner, Marc Werner, struggled to find relief for his back pain after having multiple spinal surgeries. The GhostBed memory foam topper is a cost effective way to relieve pressure points and back pain while keeping you cooler.

Latex is a premium bedding material used to make some of the best mattress toppers in the market. So if you're looking for the best of the best it's definitely a material to consider. Natural latex like what's found in the PlushBeds mattress topper gives superior pressure relief when compared to other materials used to make memory foam mattress toppers.
When you have back pain, it's all about pressure relief, and this mattress topper did a great job relieving pressure points, even with the 2 inch model. PlushBeds Natural Latex mattress topper can also help you sleep peacefully if you're having broken ribs. If you're willing to spend a little more, the 3-inch version should be even better. It can bring life back to an existing mattress without having to shell out extra money for a whole mattress upgrade.
The PlushBeds natural latex mattress topper is aerated to help keep you cool while you sleep, which is great if you suffer from night sweats or just generally tend to sleep a bit warm.
This plush mattress topper is also hypoallergenic, assuming you don't have a latex allergy. It's actively dust and mildew resistant and will last up to 20 years or longer with proper care. It's an investment in your sleep health, and if you struggle from back pain and aren't ready for a new mattress, it's a great choice to make the most difference in your sleep for the best possible price.

Besides exacerbating chronic back pain, a sleep surface that feels too stiff can result in new aches and pressure points. If your old mattress is excessively firm and rigid, the Puffy mattress topper can act as a solid temporary fix before you buy a new bed. Like Saatva mattress topper, It's designed with pure memory foam that cushions well for proper spinal alignment and minimizes discomfort in your hips, shoulders, and lumbar region.
Available in two firmness options, the soft feel option contours very closely for back and side sleepers weighing up to 230 pounds. The firm feel, on the other hand, will likely be comfortable for sleepers with back pain weighing more than 230 pounds. Another notable feature of the Puffy mattress topper is its cover. It's made of thick and breathable bamboo fabric which offers exceptional breathability to help your mattress topper retain less heat and sleep cool.
The stretchy cover is made of durable elastic pockets to help keep the topper in place without shifting too much during the night. This mattress topper comes in six different sizes that correspond to regular mattress dimensions. It's priced reasonably and ships free in the contiguous U.S. Each topper includes a 101-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty.

If traditional foam toppers are more your style, this super thick three inch hybrid foam mattress topper by Keetsa is a solid choice. It's one of the only hybrid mattress toppers, which is a combination of a proprietary BioFoam, covered by a fiber padding, and finally encased in a hemp blend cover.
The biofoam is Keetsa unique foam that conforms to your body, but has cooling properties to actively combat the common issue of memory foam making you hot while you sleep. One thing to note about this topper is that the biofoam is great, but it's not enough if you consider yourself a hot sleeper and that's something you're specifically looking to combat with a memory foam mattress topper like Saatva mattress topper. Since it's a hybrid with multiple layers, the biofoams cooling properties aren't as noticeable as something like latex.
Generally, this is one of the thickest and the best mattress toppers available on the market and can be a great choice if you have an older mattress. that is if that old mattress still has some life left but needs a little extra comfort layer added to help alleviate some back pain issues.

This foam mattress topper by Sleep Innovations is definitely an innovation with the 4 inches of fiber and gel memory foam put together. It’s just like sleeping atop your pillow on this foam topper, but of course, you’ll stay nice and cool all night too. The foam is made to be cooling, while the entire cover is washable. Sleeping just got a whole lot easier.
When it comes to lower back pain, the key thing you need is even support to relieve pressure, especially if you have a condition like Sciatica and need to learn how to sleep with sciatica. A memory foam mattress topperis a great material to provide this. If you have a new-ish mattress, meomry foam toppers can be a great addition to help ease lower back pain and keep you comfortable throughout the night with improved pressure relief.
Sleep Innovations is a well known, well liked brand in the mattress industry. And this is one of their best mattress toppers, which reflect the same level of quality. Arguably, it's no secret that sleep innovations mattress toppers fall under the best Mattress toppers for lower back pain since it's made of higher quality materials than the average foam topper.

One thing you’ll notice right away about this Oakskys Queen Mattress bed pad is that it’s cool and breathable, not to mention that it’s ultra-soft. The first thing people normally notice is the diamond-shaped seams, which are great for support and easy to care for. Since this mattress topper has some elastic to it, it’s easy to fit on your bed, and shouldn’t have any problems in the washing machine either. Not only does this make it the best mattress topper for stomach sleepers, but also for back and side sleepers. This product is as durable as it is useful.
If a foam product isn't for you, a down or down alternative mattress topper like this one can be a super affordable and comfortable option. The diamond seems of this particular topper make it more evenly supportive than other down alternative toppers where the stuffing may clump in certain areas.
If for whatever reason, you're against memory foam, this is hands down the best toppers in the down-alternative toppers arena for hips and back on beds of all sizes. Foam and gel toppers aren't for everyone's bed. Sometimes a comfort layer cover for your bed that's made of down is better.

For a mattress pad that feels just like a firm mattress, there’s no better option than Pure Green. This latex mattress topper is made to provide pinpointed support so that you can sleep well for the entire night. The whole thing is made with 100 percent natural latex without any fillers, which means that it will remain naturally cool the entire night.
If you happen to be a side or back sleeper, especially one with back pain looking to improve their sleep quality, then a latex mattress topper is generally a great choice. It has a mid-level support that most people who sleep on their side look for in a product. Unlike gel or foam, a latex mattress topper doesn't hug your body as much, and a product made of latex is generally cooler than all foam mattress toppers are. Latex toppers are also generally considered a more high quality product overall.
If you've never slept on latex before, it's sort of like sleeping on a ventilated foam, or a slightly firm mattress. This is great if you're a back sleeper who also happens to struggle with aches and pains. Latex is also hypoallergenic (unless you have a latex allergy). With this being said, latex is a premium material, and while adding this topper to your existing mattress will give you a premium-level feel, expect to pay a little more than for memory foam or down.
If you're in the market for a latex mattress topper, it's best to opt for a premium model right out of the gate. Latex is an expensive material, and ones that come in under $100 aren't going to last. If you have a lower budget, a foam topper would be best. Latex mattress toppers are great for alleviating pain, but only if you have the budget to invest in the premium material.

A lot of foam mattress toppers are just a little too warm, but not this Polar Sleep option. This is a great option for back pain thanks to the plush memory foam, making it an ideal plush mattress topper that will conform to your curves and hug you while you sleep. Not to mention that it’s made from eco-friendly material, and is infused with gel beads to ensure that any heat leaves faster and you’re able to rest.
This memory foam mattress topper stands out due to its cooling properties. A lot of times, foam tends to be warm which can be a rough experience for people who sleep hot. The mattress topper is infused with gel beads that helps dissipate heat without sacrificing support.
This plush mattress topper comes in a two inch or three inch option, and both are great options if you're looking for a solution for back pain. The thicker three inch option is good for heavier people, or if your mattress itself isn't comfortable and you want a thicker comfort layer.

Relax on three inches thick of Linenspa memory foam, which is infused with gel to help regulate your temperature for the entire night. The whole thing is made to be light and breathable, meaning that it hits your pressure points just right when you lie down to sleep. You’ll love the certified memory foam and the gel as well, but it’s also great that it can be used with any sleep surface.
Linenspa is known for its top quality sleep products, and has been around for a while. This isn't a premium mattress topper, but it still has some pros for relieving pressure points at a super affordable price point. The price of their 3 inch memory foam thickness topper is the normal price for 2 inches of foam from competitor products.
Advantages of Mattress Toppers for Back Pain
You might think that your mattress is enough, but a good mattress topper can help people who suffer from chronic back pain and hip pain—all you have to do is lie down and experience the pressure relief. You won’t be losing any sleep over the cost of your topper either, since these are much less expensive compared to a whole memory foam mattress.
While mattress toppers won't replace a bad mattress, they can can absolutely help when you have a decent mattress of any size, but just need a little extra. They provide a comfort layer and vary in thickness. They also offer a general cover for your bed. Here are some of the advantages of going with a mattress topper.
Reduces Pain (Unlike Mattress Pads)
This is the biggest advantage to having mattress toppers: relieving some of your pain without lifestyle changes. These toppers are made of soft foam and gel, which is made to conform to your body and hit all of your pressure points just right. They’re great for stomach, back and side sleepers, no matter what position you’re in, but can be especially helpful if you're one of the stomach sleepers and need a firmer topper to keep your back from over extending. More importantly, as a stomach sleeper, an avocado mattress topper may just be what you're looking for.
Other toppers in each size are also made of other materials like down or down alternative. There are pros and cons of opting for each material for the comfort layer of your bed. Make sure to listen to your body, and make sure the cons aren't a dealbreaker.
Staying Cool
Some types of foam include a gel infused memory foam layer, or are specifically designed to help keep you cool at night. If you struggle with sweating, consider a foam topper that not only helps with back pain, but also keeps you cool can drastically improve your quality of sleep.
The thickness of your bed cover also plays a role. Some covers with a larger thickness (all materials) can be great for supporting your body, but if the materials don't help keep you cool, go with products that also offer cooling properties.
Mattress Toppers Can Delay The Purchase of a New Mattress
Instead of buying a hugely expensive mattress when your old one begins to wear out, in some cases, mattress toppers can buy you some more time. One of these toppers will add support and life to your mattress and prevent you from hurting your back by sleeping on a worn-down mattress. You’ll probably feel like you’re sleeping on a whole new mattress, especially since your topper will be nice and clean.
Qualities to Look Out For in Mattress Toppers
Material For Back Pain Sufferers
Should you just get an all foam mattress topper because everyone has one? The memory foam variety can be a great choice as a mattress topper for back pain, but sometimes gel memory foam or latex pad can provide you more comfort throughout the night just like an avocado mattress topper.
What your topper is made out of matters. If you’re looking for something to relieve your back pain, you’ll want memory foam or latex, both of which will conform to your body to relieve any pressure you feel. Latex mattress toppers for back pain have more of a responsibility than a normal topper. These toppers need to provide relief.
Memory foam produces one of the best products such as the best mattress toppers for back pain since it conforms along your body. It’s made to support you fully no matter what position you lay in or your weight since your weight will be distributed evenly. A foam mattress topper will also help with motion isolation. This means if you tend to move around at night, on the best memory foam mattress topper from our selection, rest assured that you won't disturb your partner.
Thickness For Back Pain Sufferers
Memory foam thickness even that of latex, is something to look for in mattress toppers for back pain. Generally, mattress topper products will range from 2 inches to 4 inches thick. Mattress toppers vary in many ways and if you tend to have worse levels of back pain, you’ll want something that’s 4 in thick and has more support to it to relieve pressure points. If your back pain isn’t as severe, you’ll likely be okay with something that’s a little thinner since you don't have as much of a need to relieve pressure points.
Firmness For Back Pain Sufferers
You don’t want to sleep on a memory foam mattress topper (or other material) that’s too firm or too soft for you and agitates your pressure points. Products that are too soft can mess up your back even more (worsening an existing back pain), while you may not be able to sleep on something that’s too firm for your weight or your spine. You can help choose your topper’s firmness based on your existing mattress. If you have a softer mattress, a layer of support that’s a little firmer might be your best option.
When looking for a memory foam mattress topper for back pain (or other material), you should take into consideration the firmness of your mattress too, to help get the best overall feel for your body. A firm mattress for someone who likes a soft mattress won't feel comfortable, just like a soft mattress won't feel as comfortable if you like a firm mattress. Suppose you're tight on budget, polyfoam mattress toppers are worth considering as they are much cheaper than memory foam or latex toppers.
Consider Your Partners Needs Too!
If you're sharing a king or a queen mattress, make sure you're talking with your partner about the thickness they like, and the types of comfort preferences they have for their sleep surface. Maybe they'll like the same memory foam mattress topper, latex mattress topper, or saatva mattress topper you like...maybe they won't! You may like a firm mattress, they may not like a firm mattress. To relieve back pain, you both need to agree on what you like.
A larger mattress, like a king size mattress, is a huge investment. A foam or latex mattress topper for a mattress that size isn't going to be cheap either. Get the thickness level you want from your bed cover that works for both your body and your partner's body. If it's just you that suffers from lower back pain, talk to your significant other about how a mattress topper is a great cost effective way to find relief.
If both you and your significant other are upset with the way your mattress feels when it comes to its ability to relieve back pain, consider the pros and cons of shopping for a new mattress altogether. It isn't always needed, and sometimes the best mattress topper has the materials you need for relief, but if you can agree on a budget, the pros of opting for a new mattress are hard to ignore.
How To Know If You Need a New Mattress
To be completely honest, if you have an old mattress and you have low back pain, it doesn't matter what size, thickness of your mattress topper, a good comfort layer won't outweigh the cons of an old mattress and adequately relieve pressure points. A topper will not make up for a totally bad sleep surface starting point. A mattress topper is exactly what it sounds like. Its a comfort layer added on top of a bed. It can cover up an aging mattress, but it can't fix all of your problems. If you have issues with back pain, you need to listen to your body.
Getting relief from back pain can be tricky, but theres pros and cons to choosing a mattress topper of a new mattress. One of the big pros is the immediate relief you'll likely feel. If budget is getting in the way of you buying a new mattress, a mattress topper can be a great bandaid.
If your mattress is sagging in certain sleep surface areas, has any rips or is generally making you question its overall durability, its time to make the choice to start looking not just at mattress toppers, but potentially a new mattress as well.
If you mattress is still under warranty, take advantage! Many mattress manufacturers have a lifetime warranty, and a 10 year warranty is the industry standard. Check to see if a warranty can help you get a new mattress outright. Don't sacrifice your comfort and settle for the cons of adding a mattress topper to a bad mattress. Get the comfort you deserve!
What Causes Low Back Pain, and Can a Mattress Topper Really Help?
Low back pain can come from a number of different things, ranging from issues with posture and keeping good spine alignment, to the surface you're sleeping on and your weight.
On of the biggest factors of low back pain is the lack of pressure relief on your spine. If you have bad posture, or incur back pain, that means there's excess pressure being put your spine. This is only worsened if you struggle with weight issues on top of everything else. Finding a product that can make a difference can be difficult, and not every product can actually help.
Different people have different needs, and a product that might relieve back pain for one personal may worsen it for someone else. Make sure you go with the product or products that are the best option for you. Consider the materials that you like, the high quality and durability of them, your body shape, and all of the pros and cons of the product you choose to provide some relief. Essentially, depending on how these mattress toppers vary, you should be able to pick a suitable choice you're sure will improve your sleep quality.
Closing Thoughts For Back Pain Sufferers
Back pain is debilitating. It’s even worse when your back hurts just after you wake up and you have to deal with it for the rest of the day. Relieve your back pain with a good mattress topper then, which will support your body completely and help you sleep well. You just have to make sure that you don’t lose any sleep picking one out! Make sure to weigh the pros and cons of each topper, and consider things like the material it's made out of and the thickness.

You’re welcome!
I have a pillow top mattress now but it is starting to make my hips sore and low back but can’t really afford a new mattress right now. So what thickness of a mattress topper would be best for me?
Hey Bonnie!
Assuming your mattress isn’t in too bad of shape, a 2-3inch topper should make a difference. Memory foam is great, but if you sleep hot and can afford to spend a bit more, latex is an awesome choice to add. It’s cooler and just as supportive without feeling like you’re trapped in a marshmallow of foam. We are testing out PlushBeds natural Latex topper and we’re super excited about how its performing. It’ll probably get added to this list soon. Check it out here.
I am suffering with disc protrusion and currently looking for a mattress topper that I can use to sleep on a bed with wooden plank rather than using a mattress. Can you please suggest which mattress topper will work better for me? I felt the 3 inch gel memory foam is too sinking.
This is such a comprehensive list of mattresses. I am going to check them out. Mattresses make a lot of difference to sleep quality and REM cycles. Thanks for putting together such a good comparison. God bless.
Hi
I have terrible shoulder and neck pain when I wake up and it’s now lingering into the day
– it’s bad
I removed my Costco foam topper and for the first time in a long time, This morning I woke up without leg pain and stiffness!
It was great! However, I am a side sleeper and my bed is too hard – and I definitely need some sort of topper. I am 58 – 160.
What do you recommend for me? I don’t want to waste my money and have to return one..
Thank you!
Hey Linda,
You may want to look into latex (If you don’t have a latex allergy of course!) It’s a naturally firmer and cooler material than memory foam, but still adds a comfort layer to an existing bed which it sounds like you need if the memory foam isn’t working. With most toppers you can choose a firmness, but just remember latex does tend to run firm so if you’re a side sleeper, the softest latex available should be a good pick.
My husband and I had purchased a new mattress. We were going with the trend that a firmer mattress would be good for our backs. After months of a sore back, we had to do something! We found a LUCID Gel mattress! This pad is amazing. I feel like I’m sleeping on a cloud. So easy to fall asleep now and we wake up well-rested. Ever since we got this we’ve been sleeping through the night with no problem.
Samantha, I’m thrilled you found something that works for you! Sleep preferences are so personal, so it’s hard to give sweeping advice that works for everyone, but I’m happy hear you found what works for you and your husband.
Hi Courtney, I read many of your posts, and I love them, especially this post. Your article is really useful for me to make a decision to get a new mattress. Thanks so much for sharing!

We have a Lucid Gel memory foam mattress topper. We took it out of the box and the ends of the top is flatten and crush and don’t pop up uagain. How can we get it to come back up again?
I had a really really firm mattress, like a rock. I ordered a 2″ medium topper from sleep on latex and it helped quite a bit. 3″ might have been even better, but we ended up getting a whole new mattress, because I couldn’t stand the innerspring system. I’m small like you, 5′ 1″, 118 lbs.
