Overall Thoughts:
As we search for a mattress topper for back pain, we look for a product that can cushion sensitive body parts and minimize discomfort while promoting proper spinal alignment. The TitanFlex Brooklyn Bedding ticked all these boxes for us. What stood out most to me was its hyper-elastic foam and multiple firmness levels that all come at a reasonable price point of $190 to $232 for a queen depending on the cover you choose.
This mixed-foam topper is made of TitanFlex foam, which is engineered to contour to the body, much like traditional memory foam, but boasts the higher responsiveness and pressure relief of latex. Available in 3 firmness levels, the soft version contours very closely for side sleepers weighing less than 130 pounds, while the medium model should cushion the spine and minimize discomfort in the shoulders, hips, and lumbar region of stomach sleepers and back sleepers weighing less than 230 pounds. Lastly, the firm mattress topper version should offer extra support for sleepers who prefer a thicker topper and weigh more than 230 pounds.
Another notable feature of this foam topper is its cooling top cover. I got to experience their 2 options of zippered fabrics, both of which offer excellent cooling. The high-end organic cotton cover is specially designed to protect the longevity of your topper while promoting a cool and hypoallergenic sleep environment. The premium circular knit cover, on the other hand, combines silky smoothness with excellent breathability for maximum airflow.
The TitanFlex Brooklyn Bedding topper is available in 7 sizes, meaning you can easily find a model corresponding to standard mattress dimensions. What's more, it's priced competitively, and shipping is free for shoppers in the U.S. Each topper includes a sleep trial period of 120 nights and a 3-year warranty for customers who choose to keep the topper. Note that warranties are on product defects and invalid when you personally destroy the topper with liquid leaks and misuse. Those who aren't completely happy with their product may return the topper after a 30-day break-in period for a full refund. However, there's a return fee of $99 for all mattress returns.

Latex is a premium bedding material popular for its comfort and durability. And if you love eco-friendly products like I do, then this topper should be your go-to. According to this clinical trial, medium firm mattresses are best for sleepers with chronic lower back pain. The Plushbeds brand offers different firmness levels for this topper, so we chose the 2 inch medium firm topper and tested it on my old medium firm mattress that had started losing its firmness. While testing this PlushBeds mattress topper, I experienced a lot of pain relief on my lower back and went through the day without any back pain. The topper was also soft and kind to my skin.
It’s important to note that, with a natural latex topper you don’t have to worry about ozone depleters, VOCs and other toxic chemicals. But to build your confidence in the product, the manufacturers made sure to have the topper certified by OEKO-TEX and Greenguard.
The PlushBeds pure latex mattress topper features holes that kept me cool while I slept, which is great if you suffer from night sweats or just generally tend to sleep hot.
This plush mattress topper is also anti-microbial, dust mite resistant, and hypoallergenic, assuming you don't have a latex allergy. It's engineered to be actively dust and mildew resistant and will last up to 20 years or longer with proper care. It's a for-sure investment in your sleep health, and if you struggle from back pain and aren't ready for a new mattress, it's a great choice to make the most difference in your sleep. If you're willing to spend a little more, the 3-inch version is a better option. It can bring life back to an aging mattress without having to shell out extra money for a whole mattress upgrade. Expect to pay about $300 for the queen-size model and about $195 for the twin mattress topper.
PlushBeds offers free shipping within the contiguous U.S. While returns aren't accepted once you unbox your topper, each purchase includes a 5-year limited warranty against material defects.

The Nolah mattress topper is made of AirFoam, the proprietary material that makes Nolah premium mattresses so popular among sleepers with persistent back pain. The AirFoam material has a denser composition that contoured closely to my body, distributing my weight, and minimizing painful pressure points around the lumbar region and other highly sensitive body parts along the spine.
Luckily you get to choose between a medium firm and medium soft models, making this topper a viable option for various types of sleepers. If you're a side sleeper weighing up to 230 pounds like me, you'll want to stick with the medium soft mattress topper model which offered me deep cushioning and great support. Stomach sleepers and back sleepers under 130 pounds should also find this model comfortable for their sleep needs. The medium firm topper, on the other hand, is supportive enough to withstand the weight of sleepers of different body types, irrespective of their sleeping positions. Remember it all depends on the firmness level and condition of your existing mattress.
I liked that this memory foam topper for back pain features elastic straps at the corners to keep the mattress from shifting when you change sleep positions during the night. The topper also comes with a soft and breathable organic cotton cover that is hypoallergenic and soft in texture. It is naturally moisture-wicking to offset memory foam's heat-retaining properties, helping sleepers stay cool throughout the night. You can also rest assured that your topper is healthy and safe for you and the environment as it has CertiPUR-US certification. This means it doesn't contain any ozone depleters, VOCs (volatile organic compounds) or heavy metals, such as lead and mercury.
The Nolah topper comes in 6 sizes that correspond to standard mattress dimensions. Its affordable sticker price of $194 to $324 for a twin-size and Cal king topper respectively, makes this model an ideal pick for shoppers on a budget. Plus, Nolah offers free shipping to shoppers in the contiguous United States. Each order includes a 30-night sleep trial period. If you decide to keep your new topper after this period ends, you'll also get a 10-year warranty against material and structural defects. On the other hand, if you don't like your new mattress topper, you can return it within the first 30 days for a refund.

The Birch Organic Topper is designed with high-quality, organic materials, making it one of the best luxury mattress topper addition to any mattress. Lightweight combination sleepers should be comfortable irrespective of their sleep position. My partner and I enjoyed the softness of the topper and its breathable cover which made us cool through the night. A handful of green certifications, including GOTS and GREENGUARD, also make this mattress topper an ideal pick for eco-conscious shoppers.
The Birch topper combines a Talalay latex layer with a fire-retardant organic wool layer for a soft and light mattress feel. The former is exceptionally responsive, so I didn’t experience too much sinkage for an average sized person, especially when changing sleep positions or getting in and out of the bed. The latter rests atop the latex layer for extra body cushioning. It also boasts moisture-wicking properties to kept my partner and I feeling cool and dry on humid nights.
The medium firmness and 2-inch thickness of the Birch Organic topper provide just the perfect amount of body support to make it an excellent choice for sleepers of all body types. It should also provide a great comfort adjustment for sleep surfaces with light or moderate wear and tear.
While the Birch Organic Topper is fairly expensive, the wool's exceptional durability should guarantee a long lifespan. Plus, Helix is currently offering a 20% discount for their toppers so you can get their queen-size model for $499. Helix also offers free ground shipping to clients in the contiguous U.S., and you can return the topper within 100 days for a full refund. Each purchase is backed by a 10-year warranty against structural defects.

ViscoSoft is 3 in. thick of comfort, made of high-density, pressure relief foam mixed with a gel memory foam material that provides comfort and takes the shape of your body. This product's fluffy layer of down relieved pain and soreness in my lower back and hips. It provided me with even support along my back and other areas of my body.
The gel memory foam topper combo approach gave me a cooling experience which is good for hot sleepers and during hot and humid Summer nights. The foam layers also supported my back and remarkably aligned my spine. This added to the pressure relief experience.
The ViscoSoft 3-inch Pillow Top Gel Memory Foam Topper doesn't have hypoallergenic materials. However, it features lavender-infusions that promote calm, and restorative sleep. Plus, it comes with a removable, machine-washable cover, helping you create the cleanest sleeping surface possible.
Budget shoppers will be glad to know that this gel-infused topper is priced on par with similarly designed versions from competing brands. Expect to pay about $160 for the twin mattress topper and $220 for the queen model. Each purchase includes a 90-night trial period, giving you enough time to test your topper. If for any reason you aren't satisfied with your product, ViscoSoft offers a full refund for returns made within 90 days of purchase. Customers who decide to keep their toppers also receive a 5-year warranty.

Amerisleep has been making sleep products longer than most other direct to consumer companies out there. They have a long history of creating awesome products, which is the reason they've been around for as long as they have. This mattress topper is specifically designed as a pressure relieving mattress topper. In fact, there's another variety that's designed for more generalized comfort, but the "support" version is best if you have back pain.
Manufacturers claim that this mattress topper provides around 49% more support on its own, than an aging mattress. It's designed to relieve pressure differently in different areas of the body, with varied pressure relief for back pain and shoulders. It's made of proprietary Affinity material that provides a firmer level of support for relieving pressure points. All of this topper's foams are CertiPUR-US certified, meaning they're free of toxic chemicals that might trigger allergies.
The Amerisleep Lift mattress topper is a premium product with great attention to detail. My favorite detail is its microgrip. I've had issues with mattress toppers slipping in the past, which made turning in bed a hustle. The microgrip layer at the bottom of this mattress topper gently grips your mattress to prevent the topper from sliding away.
If you're not ready to commit to a mattress purchase, but need extra pressure relief in conjunction with support, this super supportive and breathable mattress topper is a great pick. You're looking at about $325 for the queen model and $510 for the Cal king mattress topper. However, given its high quality materials and unique design, the topper's above-average sticker price might translate into a solid investment. While Amerisleep's 100-night trial period doesn't apply to their toppers, each purchase comes with a generous 5 year warranty and free shipping.

Sleeping on three inches thick of Linenspa memory foam was really comfortable for a topper of its price point. The topper is infused with gel which helped regulate my temperature for the entire night during the second stage of testing. The product is made to be light and breathable, meaning that it hits your pressure points just right when you lie down to sleep. You’ll love the certified memory foam and the gel as well, but it’s also great that it can be used with any sleep surface.
While this isn't a premium mattress topper, it still has some pros for relieving lower back pain. With a price range of $73 to $135, the sticker price of their 3 inch memory foam thickness topper is the normal price for 2 inches of foam from competitor products. Each purchase comes with a 30-night sleep trial period and a 3-year limited warranty. Toppers purchased through Amazon also qualify for their 30-day return policy.
Advantages of Mattress Toppers for Back Pain
You might think that your mattress is enough, but a good mattress topper can help people who suffer from chronic back pain and hip pain—all you have to do is lie down and experience the pressure relief. You won’t be losing any sleep over the cost of your topper either, since these are much less expensive compared to a whole memory foam mattress.
While mattress toppers won't replace a bad mattress, they can can absolutely help when you have a decent mattress of any size, but just need a little extra. They provide a comfort layer and vary in thickness. They also offer a general cover for your bed. Here are some of the advantages of going with a mattress topper.
Reduces Pain (Unlike Mattress Pads)
This is the biggest advantage to having mattress toppers: relieving some of your pain without lifestyle changes. These toppers are made of soft foam and gel, which is made to conform to your body and hit all of your pressure points just right. They’re great for stomach, back and side sleepers, no matter what position you’re in, but can be especially helpful if you're one of the stomach sleepers and need a firmer topper to keep your back from over extending. More importantly, as a stomach sleeper, an avocado mattress topper may just be what you're looking for.
Other toppers in each size are also made of other materials like down or down alternative. There are pros and cons of opting for each material for the comfort layer of your bed. Make sure to listen to your body, and make sure the cons aren't a dealbreaker.
Staying Cool
Some types of foam include a gel infused memory foam layer, or are specifically designed to help keep you cool at night. If you struggle with sweating, consider a foam topper that not only helps with back pain, but also keeps you cool can drastically improve your quality of sleep.
The thickness of your bed cover also plays a role. Some covers with a larger thickness (all materials) can be great for supporting your body, but if the materials don't help keep you cool, go with products that also offer cooling properties.
Mattress Toppers Can Delay The Purchase of a New Mattress
Instead of buying a hugely expensive mattress when your old one begins to wear out, in some cases, mattress toppers can buy you some more time. One of these toppers will add support and life to your mattress and prevent you from hurting your back by sleeping on a worn-down mattress. You’ll probably feel like you’re sleeping on a whole new mattress, especially since your topper will be nice and clean.
Qualities to Look Out For in Mattress Toppers
Material For Back Pain Sufferers
Should you just get an all foam mattress topper because everyone has one? The memory foam variety can be a great choice as a mattress topper for back pain, but sometimes gel memory foam or latex pad can provide you more comfort throughout the night just like an avocado mattress topper.
What your topper is made out of matters. If you’re looking for something to relieve your back pain, you’ll want memory foam or latex, both of which will conform to your body to relieve any pressure you feel. Latex mattress toppers for back pain have more of a responsibility than a normal topper. These toppers need to provide relief.
Memory foam produces one of the best products such as the best mattress toppers for back pain since it conforms along your body. It’s made to support you fully no matter what position you lay in or your weight since your weight will be distributed evenly. A foam mattress topper will also help with motion isolation. This means if you tend to move around at night, on the best memory foam mattress topper from our selection, rest assured that you won't disturb your partner.
Thickness For Back Pain Sufferers
Memory foam thickness even that of latex, is something to look for in mattress toppers for back pain. Generally, mattress topper products will range from 2 inches to 4 inches thick. Mattress toppers vary in many ways and if you tend to have worse levels of back pain, you’ll want something that’s 4 in thick and has more support to it to relieve pressure points. If your back pain isn’t as severe, you’ll likely be okay with something that’s a little thinner since you don't have as much of a need to relieve pressure points.
Firmness For Back Pain Sufferers
You don’t want to sleep on a memory foam mattress topper (or other material) that’s too firm or too soft for you and agitates your pressure points. Products that are too soft can mess up your back even more (worsening an existing back pain), while you may not be able to sleep on something that’s too firm for your weight or your spine. You can help choose your topper’s firmness based on your existing mattress. If you have a softer mattress, a layer of support that’s a little firmer might be your best option.
When looking for a memory foam mattress topper for back pain (or other material), you should take into consideration the firmness of your mattress too, to help get the best overall feel for your body. A firm mattress for someone who likes a soft mattress won't feel comfortable, just like a soft mattress won't feel as comfortable if you like a firm mattress. Suppose you're tight on budget, polyfoam mattress toppers are worth considering as they are much cheaper than memory foam or latex toppers.
Consider Your Partners Needs Too!
If you're sharing a king or a queen mattress, make sure you're talking with your partner about the thickness they like, and the types of comfort preferences they have for their sleep surface. Maybe they'll like the same memory foam mattress topper, latex mattress topper, or saatva mattress topper you like...maybe they won't! You may like a firm mattress, they may not like a firm mattress. To relieve back pain, you both need to agree on what you like.
A larger mattress, like a king size mattress, is a huge investment. A foam or latex mattress topper for a mattress that size isn't going to be cheap either. Get the thickness level you want from your bed cover that works for both your body and your partner's body. If it's just you that suffers from lower back pain, talk to your significant other about how a mattress topper is a great cost effective way to find relief.
If both you and your significant other are upset with the way your mattress feels when it comes to its ability to relieve back pain, consider the pros and cons of shopping for a new mattress altogether. It isn't always needed, and sometimes the best mattress topper has the materials you need for relief, but if you can agree on a budget, the pros of opting for a new mattress are hard to ignore.
How To Know If You Need a New Mattress
To be completely honest, if you have an old mattress and you have low back pain, it doesn't matter what size, thickness of your mattress topper, a good comfort layer won't outweigh the cons of an old mattress and adequately relieve pressure points. A topper will not make up for a totally bad sleep surface starting point. A mattress topper is exactly what it sounds like. Its a comfort layer added on top of a bed. It can cover up an aging mattress, but it can't fix all of your problems. If you have issues with back pain, you need to listen to your body.
Getting relief from back pain can be tricky, but theres pros and cons to choosing a mattress topper of a new mattress. One of the big pros is the immediate relief you'll likely feel. If budget is getting in the way of you buying a new mattress, a mattress topper can be a great bandaid.
If your mattress is sagging in certain sleep surface areas, has any rips or is generally making you question its overall durability, its time to make the choice to start looking not just at mattress toppers, but potentially a new mattress as well.
If you mattress is still under warranty, take advantage! Many mattress manufacturers have a lifetime warranty, and a 10 year warranty is the industry standard. Check to see if a warranty can help you get a new mattress outright. Don't sacrifice your comfort and settle for the cons of adding a mattress topper to a bad mattress. Get the comfort you deserve!
What Causes Low Back Pain, and Can a Mattress Topper Really Help?
Low back pain can come from a number of different things, ranging from issues with posture and keeping good spine alignment, to the surface you're sleeping on and your weight.
On of the biggest factors of low back pain is the lack of pressure relief on your spine. If you have bad posture, or incur back pain, that means there's excess pressure being put your spine. This is only worsened if you struggle with weight issues on top of everything else. Finding a product that can make a difference can be difficult, and not every product can actually help.
Different people have different needs, and a product that might relieve back pain for one personal may worsen it for someone else. Make sure you go with the product or products that are the best option for you. Consider the materials that you like, the high quality and durability of them, your body shape, and all of the pros and cons of the product you choose to provide some relief. Essentially, depending on how these mattress toppers vary, you should be able to pick a suitable choice you're sure will improve your sleep quality.
Closing Thoughts For Back Pain Sufferers
Back pain is debilitating. It’s even worse when your back hurts just after you wake up and you have to deal with it for the rest of the day. Relieve your back pain with a good mattress topper then, which will support your body completely and help you sleep well. You just have to make sure that you don’t lose any sleep picking one out! Make sure to weigh the pros and cons of each topper, and consider things like the material it's made out of and the thickness.

Your blog will really help me. My husband has back pain and I need a mattress for back pain. Then I got your blog. Thank you for sharing this.
You’re welcome!
I have a pillow top mattress now but it is starting to make my hips sore and low back but can’t really afford a new mattress right now. So what thickness of a mattress topper would be best for me?
Hey Bonnie!
Assuming your mattress isn’t in too bad of shape, a 2-3inch topper should make a difference. Memory foam is great, but if you sleep hot and can afford to spend a bit more, latex is an awesome choice to add. It’s cooler and just as supportive without feeling like you’re trapped in a marshmallow of foam. We are testing out PlushBeds natural Latex topper and we’re super excited about how its performing. It’ll probably get added to this list soon. Check it out here.
I am suffering with disc protrusion and currently looking for a mattress topper that I can use to sleep on a bed with wooden plank rather than using a mattress. Can you please suggest which mattress topper will work better for me? I felt the 3 inch gel memory foam is too sinking.
This is such a comprehensive list of mattresses. I am going to check them out. Mattresses make a lot of difference to sleep quality and REM cycles. Thanks for putting together such a good comparison. God bless.
Hi
I have terrible shoulder and neck pain when I wake up and it’s now lingering into the day
– it’s bad
I removed my Costco foam topper and for the first time in a long time, This morning I woke up without leg pain and stiffness!
It was great! However, I am a side sleeper and my bed is too hard – and I definitely need some sort of topper. I am 58 – 160.
What do you recommend for me? I don’t want to waste my money and have to return one..
Thank you!
Hey Linda,
You may want to look into latex (If you don’t have a latex allergy of course!) It’s a naturally firmer and cooler material than memory foam, but still adds a comfort layer to an existing bed which it sounds like you need if the memory foam isn’t working. With most toppers you can choose a firmness, but just remember latex does tend to run firm so if you’re a side sleeper, the softest latex available should be a good pick.
My husband and I had purchased a new mattress. We were going with the trend that a firmer mattress would be good for our backs. After months of a sore back, we had to do something! We found a LUCID Gel mattress! This pad is amazing. I feel like I’m sleeping on a cloud. So easy to fall asleep now and we wake up well-rested. Ever since we got this we’ve been sleeping through the night with no problem.
Samantha, I’m thrilled you found something that works for you! Sleep preferences are so personal, so it’s hard to give sweeping advice that works for everyone, but I’m happy hear you found what works for you and your husband.
Hi Courtney, I read many of your posts, and I love them, especially this post. Your article is really useful for me to make a decision to get a new mattress. Thanks so much for sharing!

We have a Lucid Gel memory foam mattress topper. We took it out of the box and the ends of the top is flatten and crush and don’t pop up uagain. How can we get it to come back up again?
I had a really really firm mattress, like a rock. I ordered a 2″ medium topper from sleep on latex and it helped quite a bit. 3″ might have been even better, but we ended up getting a whole new mattress, because I couldn’t stand the innerspring system. I’m small like you, 5′ 1″, 118 lbs.
