The best organic mattress will be made out of eco-friendly mattress materials and is better for both the environment and for you. You'll find that natural materials, used in both organic and natural mattresses, are also more long lasting than manufactured materials. They also tend to give some additional benefits like being a lot more breathable and ventilated than synthetic mattress foam.

It can be challenging finding the best organic mattresses that are truly natural or organic though, since many mattress brands can use these terms in their marketing in a dishonest way. One important point to note when shopping for the best organic mattress is to look out for the right certifications such as Global Organic Latex Standard (GOLS) and Global Organic Textile Standard (GOTS).

In this best organic mattress guide, we'll share our experience testing the best ones on the market.

  • Supportive, durable hybrid design, reinforced by a 25-year warranty
  • Sustainably produced

What We Don't Like

  • Responsive design may limit motion isolation

Overall Thoughts:

Latex hybrid mattresses tend to be the most expensive alternatives on the market, but the Birch Mattress maintains a competitive price point. It also boasts numerous certifications, making it an ideal pick for eco-conscious sleepers.

The Birch Natural Mattress consists of an organic and wool batting layer that boasts moisture-wicking properties to keep sleepers cool during the night. Beneath it lies a Talalay latex comfort layer that offers some noticeable contouring and creates a highly responsive feel when you get into bed. What's more, it's ventilated with small holes for maximum airflow near the surface. The latex material has earned certifications from various institutions, such as OEKO-TEX and Eco-Institut, so you can rest easy knowing that your mattress doesn't contain any hazardous chemicals or volatile organic compounds.

Thick, individually pocketed coils create a robust support core for the mattress. These coils feel robust under the hips and torso and are thicker along the perimeter, so you shouldn't sink too much when sitting or sleeping near the edges. Plus, they promote air circulation to help your bed maintain a cool temperature.

A breathable organic cotton cover encases the entire mattress. This organic bed measures 11 inches thick, meaning it's a medium-profile mattress and is somehow lower to the ground than other latex hybrid mattresses on the market. Free shipping and an approachable sticker price make the Birch Mattress an ideal alternative for eco-conscious shoppers with tight budgets. It is backed with a 100-night sleep trial and a partially prorated 25-year warranty against structural defects.

Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress

What We Like

  • Those of you with hip and lower back pain will notice some positive relief
  • The medium-firm feel is good for people who are combination sleeper or have partners with different firmness preferences
  • It’s a good mattress for side sleepers, thanks to the firmness and support

What We Don't Like

  • The mattress itself is a little heavy, so it can be difficult to move

Overall Thoughts:

One of the best organic mattress that feels cool and supportive, you really can’t go wrong with the Botanical Bliss. This organic mattress is made with a knitted organic cotton cover, which offers unrestricted airflow while you’re sleeping.

If you do tend to sweat a lot, you’ll like the fact that this best organic mattress has wool inside. The wool not only provides you with a lot of support, but also wicks away moisture in the summer and keeps you warm in the winter.

Beyond the GOTS certified organic wool and GOLS certified latex that Botanical Bliss uses, you should also know how it feels to sleep on this organic mattress. You'll be glad to know that if you sleep with a partner, this mattress is great if the two of you have different preferences for firmness. The medium-firm option is adequately comfortable for most people and is a great compromise between couples who can't decide on one level of firmness.

When we tested this best organic mattress, we found it to be extremely comfortable and it provided legitimate pressure relief to back sleepers on account of the two foam layers of Talalay and Dunlop latex, with a sort of buoyant feeling to it. Handmade with GOTS certified organic cotton and GOLS certified organic latex, this mattress comes recommended by chiropractors and even orthopedic specialists for its high quality support and effective pressure relief.

We appreciated how this mattress for side sleepers is naturally hypoallergenic and dust mite resistant and there were no harmful chemicals or smells, caused by volatile organic compounds from synthetic materials when we took it out of the box. Overall, Botanical Bliss' organic mattresses are great for people with allergies who seek the best organic materials that tend to resist mildew and mold too.

Overall Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

When testing Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress as combination sleepers, we realized that it doesn't eliminate motion transfer. In other words, we could notice when our partners got out of bed or changed their sleeping position. However, the motion wasn't substantial enough to disrupt nap time.

Pressure Relief

Latex-based beds offer more petite body-conforming than memory foam mattresses, and Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress is not exempt.

You will not sink too deep into the bed; however, the mattress offers less adequate pressure relief. We notice that the bed provides sufficient support and cradling regardless of your sleeping position and body weight.

Temperature Control

Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress offers adequate temperature neutrality, allowing you to sleep cool and comfy all night.

The best organic latex mattress is constructed with naturally breathable materials and latex foam to increase airflow. Also, the natural wool and organic cotton cover wick away moisture to maintain a controlled and consistent temperature.

Edge Support

Botanical Bliss Organic Latex Mattress especially when compared to a memory foam mattress. This makes this bed a perfect fit for restless sleepers as they can across the mattress surface without falling.

Nolah Natural 11

What We Like

  • Easy movement and sturdy perimeter support across the surface
  • Zoned coils offer maximum support on the midsection to minimize sinkage
  • Works on any flat surface from a box spring to a platform bed to an adjustable bed
  • More durable and longer-lasting than high-end memory foam

What We Don't Like

  • Sleepers with joint pain may prefer more contouring

Overall Thoughts:

If you're searching for a new organic mattress that's non-toxic and made of natural materials, with green certifications that can make you feel comfortable about what you're lying on, then the Nolah Natural 11 Hybrid Mattress is a great option. Expertly crafted, this latex hybrid mattress is an 11" deep bed that boasts a combination of proprietary spring coils and soft layers to give sleepers the best and healthiest sleep ever.

It consists of materials like organic cotton, wool, and Talalay latex, which help wick away moisture to keep you cool throughout the night. A GOTS-certified cotton cover wraps around your organic mattress. Cotton naturally enhances air circulation to cool the sleep surface, and a breathable, temperature-regulating layer made of wool further adds to this effect.

When it comes to pressure relief, you'll absolutely love the moderate relief this cooling organic mattress offers. Its Talalay latex comfort system perfectly cradles your curves and has enough give to provide spinal support. However, it won't conform to your body as closely as memory foam.

Nolah's core is also designed for spinal support with an intensive coil density in the lumbar region. Available only online, this green "mattress-in-a-box" can be delivered directly to your doorstep with free shipping!

Eco Terra Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress

What We Like

  • Good value for money; an affordable option for eco-conscious sleepers who want a mattress made with organic materials
  • The pocketed coils ensure that this won’t sag, and the placement of the coils in the middle help specifically with your spine
  • The cotton and coils help with sleeping hot during the night

What We Don't Like

  • It is a little softer to sleep on in general

Overall Thoughts:

The Eco Terra Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress includes natural Talalay latex and fabric-encased coils in the core for lots of support around your spine. If you notice that you need a mattress that really feels comfortable on your pressure points, this might be the mattress for you—no matter what sleeping position or weight you are.

When you lie down on this natural Talalay latex mattress, you'll notice that the organic latex will not necessarily conform to you like memory foam layers, but it will still keep you cool with the cotton cover over top.

The Eco Terra comes in two firmness options: medium or medium firm mattress. If you want something exceptionally soft or firm, you might not enjoy the medium options of these latex hybrids as much. The medium options are great if you and your partner have different sleeping preferences.

The organic wool and GOTS-certified cotton are made to keep you cool during the night while keeping away allergens and dust mites. If you do tend to struggle with allergies then, this Talalay latex mattress might be your best option. The coils inside this organic mattress help with any pains you have as well, since they do a great job with supporting your pressure points just right. They’re also individually wrapped and set around the edges for support while you sleep at night.

Like the Eden mattress, this Eco Terra organic mattress clocks in at about a 5 on firmness if you choose the medium option. It's a 6 on the firmness scale for the medium firm option. It might be a little too soft for some of you who want something a little firmer. You do have three inches of talalay latex, after all, which is made to be very buoyant and responsive unlike memory foam which can be somewhat stiffer. It won’t completely conform to the shape of your body like other foam options, but it still does have some density to it that works well to help out your pressure points.

Side sleepers should go for the medium option as they'll enjoy just enough sinking into the mattress and adequate support and cushion for their shoulders. Side sleepers who are heavier should opt for the medium firm Talalay latex mattress though so they don't feel like they sink in too much.

The Eco Terra is well loved by back sleepers for its strong lumbar support and spinal alignment. Stomach sleepers should go for the medium firm version of Eco Terra, so their stomach and hips don't press in too much on the mattress. We should note that stomach sleepers who weigh more might want to skip this and go for a non toxic mattress that's much firmer and more supportive all around.

Overall Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Stomach Sleepers can expect hybrids to conduct motion across the surface compared to other organic latex mattresses and foam mattresses due to the added innerspring mattress coils. Coils add bounce and are less likely to absorb motion created by a sleeper's movement.

However, Eco Terra Hybrid Mattress limits motion transfer by individually encased coils. Additionally, the New Zealand wool organic cotton batting on the top layer assists in absorbing motion.

As this mattress comes with a big bounce facilitated by latex and coils, motion transfer is more likely than expected with memory foam mattresses. With this in mind, co-sleepers sharing the bed may feel their partner's movement, and light sleepers are easily disturbed. Firmness Medium firm Eco Terror option has more body-conforming, which helps in absorbing motion.

Pressure Relief

Latex mattresses gently contours to a sleeper's body shape to enhance pressure relief. The Eco Terra Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress is armed with a thick comfort layer, which cushions pressure points and reduces tension. Individually wrapped coils react independently to pressure, ensuring that your spine is aligned correctly.

The firmness medium-firm Eco Terror option relieves pressure perfectly for side sleepers and stomach sleepers weighing 130 pounds and below, thanks to the soft latex that cradles the body while cushioning pressure points. You will not sink too profoundly or feel hugged by the mattress. Therefore, the bed offers average pressure relief.

This mattress is an ideal option for stomach and back sleepers as the medium-firm latex provides firm support. This reduces pressure on the lower back.

Temperature Control

Eco Terra Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress stands out among hybrids, particularly in temperature neutrality. Each layer is designed to dissipate body heat and enhance airflow.

The cotton cover in the comfort layers wicks away moisture as the organic wool batting acts as a natural insulator. As it is, the moisture wicking wool regulates temperature as it draws heat away from the body.

The coil support is not left out either. It increases air circulation throughout the mattress helping in dissipating heat.

Although beds with firmness medium-firm conform to your body more closely, the natural products are breathable. The temperature regulating mattress layers make Eco Terra Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress ideal for hot sleepers. Both options ensure a temperature-neutral feel.

Edge support

Hybrids come with reinforced perimeters that provide solid edge support. This is the same case for Eco Terra Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress, armed with 16- gauge coils on the support base.

Edge support makes it easy for a sleeper to get in and out of the mattress while increasing the usable surface of the bed. We noticed adequate compression on the Eco Terra Natural Latex Hybrid Mattress when sitting or lying on the edges. Therefore, most latex mattresses have a resilient comfort layer, allowing it to bounce back to its shape when weight is removed. This helps prevent sagging and impressions in the long run.

Amerisleep Organica Mattress

What We Like

  • Amerisleep's Organica organic mattresses are durable with their premium materials and design - they should last you for around 20 years
  • It’s breathable and cooling, thanks to the cover and the wool
  • Made with natural, certified organic materials and no harmful chemicals and harmful substances like flame retardants

What We Don't Like

  • It is a little more expensive than some comparable options

Overall Thoughts:

Amerisleep is well known for their high quality mattresses, so it’s no surprise that their Organica Mattress is one of the best options when it comes to natural mattresses. Made to be the best cooling organic mattress, yet still with some cushioning to it, this mattress will provide you with some solid pressure relief, thanks to the talalay latex mattress construction and the wool barrier. That wool will keep you cool in the summer by wicking away moisture, but it does wonders to keep you warm in the winter too. Unlike a traditional memory foam mattress, this bed has much better air flow and ventilation.

The Amerisleep Organica is designed with a latex layer instead of traditional memory foam. It also has a coil system for ample support and bounce. Measuring in at a 6 on the firmness scale, this mattress is rather versatile, accommodating virtually all types of sleepers, including combination sleepers, no matter what their sleep positions or weight are.

Before we share our experience with it, note that the Organica is crafted with materials certified by OEKO-TEK, the Rainforest Alliance, Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) and eco-INSTITUT. In fact, the company even contributes to local manufacturing and sustainable farming practices with their sales.

When we tested this organic mattress, we found that it's comfortable for people who weigh between around 130 and 230 pounds and who sleep on their backs and stomachs. It has a good bounce to it, so you won’t sink into it and you'll feel adequately supported.

We felt that the bounce and medium firmness made this a great and very durable mattress for those who sleep with a partner with a different sleeping preference, or with a different body type. The motion isolation is actually pretty good since the Amerisleep does have pocketed coils inside, but there is still some motion transfer to it. If you have a very restless partner, you might want something with more foam.

You also might want something just a little more responsive underneath you, something with more foam. This isn’t the most suitable option if you would really like to sink into your mattress. If you tend to have difficulty getting in and out of bed though, its strong edge support and stable perimeter will be a plus point. The reinforced perimeter also goes a long way in preventing sagging on the edges, while also allowing you to utilize the entire bed surface.

Don’t forget about the GOTS-certified cotton cover either, which is made to keep this mattress cooling in the long run, and which we found helps you get a good night’s sleep too.

The Organica does cost more than the average mattress options on the market but it really stands out with its premium quality, top notch construction and materials.

Overall Organica Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

Amerisleep Organica Mattress is made with memory foam, a product well known for motion isolation. Although its contouring isn't adequately extensive compared to other memory foam beds, it limits motion transfer across the mattress surface.

Pressure Relief

Pressure relief is limited in the Amerisleep Organica Mattress due to its former and thinner design. It's 2" thick, making the comfort system unable to accommodate heavyweight individuals and those with sharp pressure points. It still rates above average for lightweight sleepers though it may be insufficient for heavyweights.

Temperature Control

Because of its firmness and medium-firm feel, sleepers in any position don't sink too far into the Amerisleep Organica Mattress. This can be directly translated as an adequate temperature control bed as air circulation is enhanced around a sleeper's body.

The cover made from breathable cotton polyester also assists temperature control.

Edge Support

Amerisleep Organica Mattress does not suffer from negative edge support. The bio-pur foam is prone to compress near the edge; however, this layer is 2" thick and is buttressed with a firm Bio-Core support that sits just underneath. The resulting product is a mattress that retains stability around its perimeter.

Latex For Less Natural Latex Mattress

What We Like

  • You can flip the mattress to the side that suits your preference
  • It has a lower profile than some other options, so you don’t need sheets that are super deep
  • Both sides of this mattress also have a wool layer to help you keep cool

What We Don't Like

  • This is one of the most expensive options for you

Overall Thoughts:

Unlike the all natural latex mattress, the Latex For Less Natural Latex Mattress is a versatile and affordable mattress that comes with a responsive feel that you’re looking for in a good mattress. But this mattress is more than just one mattress—you can flip it. No matter what side you’re on, this mattress is made completely of latex without petroleum-based polyurethane foam and harmful chemicals, like flame retardants and includes an organic cotton cover to keep you cool too.

Any eco-conscious shopper would be glad to know that Latex For Less organic mattresses are certified by Oeko-Tex Standard 100, GOTS and Eco-Institut for the purity of their materials.
We were impressed by the wool barrier, which is made to breathe better while providing a flame-resistant barrier for you to sleep on. And when it comes to sleeping on it, you can customize your experience depending on which side you’ve chosen.

There’s a firm side and a medium side, so you have the ability to choose how you want to sleep, but we would recommend the medium side if you have a partner that has different sleeping preferences than you.

What makes the Latex For Less organic mattresses interesting is that they actually have a medium feel that most children tend to like. If you’re looking for  the best natural or organic mattresses that will be good for a child’s bed, this is a good option.

These latex mattresses have small holes in it to help with ventilation and airflow, unlike normal memory foam which tends to trap heat. This helps the mattress retain a cool temperature through the night, which certainly helps give both adults and children hot sleepers a comfortable sleep throughout.

When we tested this Latex For Less mattress, we were impressed by how soft and cooling these organic beds were. We also loved how responsive it was, thanks to the talalay latex on the medium side, which has a little more give. If you want a little less give, just flip it to the firmer side, which includes organic Dunlop latex. Both sides will still mold to your body, but you will notice the difference.

Overall Mattress Performance

Motion Isolation

The 9" Latex For Less Natural Latex Mattress absorbs motion to a moderate degree. Latex has natural responsiveness; it, however, conforms to a sleeper, making the surface inadequately springy. Additionally, the mattress is relatively quiet. These abilities make Latex For Less Natural Latex Mattress a perfect fit for light sleepers quickly awakened by their partner's motion.

Pressure Relief

This mattress model is not likely to alleviate pressure for heavyweights and side sleepers. It's, however, better suited to stomach and back sleepers as they won't sink in too much around the waist and torso. Therefore, such sleepers will experience less pressure all over their body.

Temperature Control

Thanks to the products used to produce Latex For Less Natural Latex Mattress, temperature control is a significant pro. Latex, for instance, comes with tiny holes that enhance airflow. This helps the mattress to maintain a comfy and cool temperature, perfect for hot sleepers.

Edge Support

Latex For Less Natural Latex Mattress surprisingly offers strong edge support. Most similar models have weaker perimeters.

Conclusion

There are so many good organic mattresses on the market. Not only will the best organic mattresses benefit you and the environment, you’ll likely notice yourself sleeping better and enjoy better indoor air quality without chemical smells caused by volatile organic compounds, or dust mites worsening your allergies. Always check to make sure the best organic mattress of your choice has the right certifications such as the GOLS of the Global Organic Textiles Standard (GOTS) and be sure to know what you need from a mattress to help you make your decision.
