That means over 33% of us are struggling at night. An uncomfortable mattress can be the cause.
If you're not quite ready to invest in a new mattress, you may find some excellent benefits from renewing the bed you already have.
Here are some of the best tips for making your mattress softer.
Get a Memory Foam Mattress Topper
This is huge. Getting a good mattress topper can take a mattress from "meh" to "oh yeahhhhh!".
If you're not in the position to buy an entirely new mattress, a mattress topper may be the best route for you.
Mattress toppers come in all shapes and sizes, but there are a few things you need to know before diving into buying one.
Not all mattress toppers are created equally. They vary drastically in price because they vary drastically in thickness and overall quality.
Generally speaking, the thicker the mattress topper, the more significant difference it's going to make in the softness of your bed. If you get a mattress topper that is 3 inches or taller, you're going to notice the most difference in your mattress comfort.
The denser the mattress topper, the more "memory" it's going to have. Denser mattress toppers respond better to your weight, provide better support, and are generally more durable than less dense mattress toppers.

Step On The Bed
If you recently bought a new mattress, it may be firmer than you were expecting. This is completely normal. Just like a new pair of shoes, a bed needs to be broken in to get to its ideal comfort level.
With sock on, walk around on your mattress for a few minutes. You should repeat this daily for at least a week to notice a difference.
Check Your Foundation
If you've already tried both of the above options, you may want to check your bed's foundation. Are there any broken support slats or are you on a mattress that should have a box spring, but you're missing one?
Without a solid, reliable foundation, your bed won't be as comfortable as it is designed to be.
If needed, you may have to purchase replacement parts to get your bed's support system up to snuff.
Sometimes thought, it may just be easier to buy a new mattress if you have issues with the foundation of your current mattress.
Extra Tips For Being Comfortable On An Overly Firm Mattress
Whether you're a side sleeper, a stomach sleeper, a back sleeper, or are unsure; everyone can agree that we all want a comfortable place to sleep at night.
If you're at a hotel, Airbnb, or staying anywhere else temporarily, you won't be able to use any of the tips above. Here are some other quick, down, and dirty tips to make a mattress softer on the go.
Quick Tip 1: Ask For Help
Don't be afraid to ask for more pillow and blankets. Most places will be happy to accommodate this request, and you can use the extra pillows and blankets to pad your uncomfortable mattress.
Quick Tip 2: Flip It
If you're not sleeping on a pillow-top mattress, you may be able to flip the mattress over to expose the other side of it. This other side is often less used, and with an older bed, can be significantly softer.
If it's not in the budget to get a new mattress just yet, you need to find ways to make your existing mattress more bearable. If you need to make a mattress softer, there are a few things you can do to make things better.
