Layla Hybrid Review

Layla offers two mattresses: the Layla Memory Foam Mattress and the Layla Hybrid Mattress. Both are made with Layla's proprietary copper-infused memory foam; however, the hybrid model (as opposed to the layla memory foam mattress) has a pocked coil core rather than a dense support memory foam core.

We got a chance to test out the Layla Hybrid, and in this Layla mattress review, we're going to break down everything we loved about the Layla mattress, as well as a few points for improvements. Let's get started!

Sleeping Position Overview

Since the Layla Hybrid mattress is flippable, it's suitable for all sleep positions. Let's break down who will like each side the best.

Soft Side - Back & Side Sleepers:

The soft side is suitable for back sleepers and side sleepers. It comes in at around a 4-5/10 on the firmness scale, which makes it a medium soft and means there's enough give for your shoulders and hips to sink into the Layla mattress. This provides excellent pressure relief, and the responsive memory foam prevents you from feeling stuck. Personally, the soft side is my favorite since these are my two most common sleep positions which benefit from a medium soft mattress.

Firm Side - Stomach Sleepers:

The firm Side of this Layla mattress is best suited for stomach sleepers. It comes in at around a 7/10 on the firmness scale, which means you won't sink in as much as you would on the medium soft side, preventing overextending your back.

Build Quality

Layla isn't the cheapest brand out there, but their products are worth every penny. The overall build quality of this mattress is superb. It feels like a premium product because of the thick honey-comb stitched cover, the attention to detail with the packaging, and the unique feeling of the copper-infused memory foam. It also has super useful handles on the side, which makes moving and flipping this mattress easy. For a super affordable bed, consider checking out our GhostBed Review

Layla Build Quality and Handles

Layers

The layers of a mattress are what makes a mattress what it is. The Layla Hybrid isn't unlike other hybrids in that it's a pocked-coil-core encased in multiple layers of memoryfoam. Here are the specifics of the layers of the Layla hybrid, so you know what you're sleeping on.

We're going to start from the soft side, so if you want to sleep on the firm Side, just know the orders of these layers will be reversed.

  • Cover - Not technically a layer, this super-soft & breathable cover has integrated handles for easy flipping from one side to the other and helps keep you cool

  • 2.5" Copper Gel Memory Foam - This soft and plush layer of memory foam rapidly cools you and helps transfer away body heat. Its a medium soft comfort layer. It has variable support for deep compression areas and is also anti-microbial to help with odor control. It's soft yet responsive, so you sink in without feeling trapped.

  • 6" Individually Wrapped Coils - These pocked coils give the mattress a responsive bounce but still manage to control motion transfer. The perimeter of the mattress is double coiled for next-level support along the edge of the mattress.

  • 1.5" Max Airflow Support Memory Foam - This supportive memory foam has less give than the copper gel foam and provides the extra support you feel when you sleep on the firm side of the mattress.

  • 1" Copper Gel Memory Foam - The thinner copper gel memory foam layer means the firm Side of the mattress has less give, but you still get the cooling, anti-microbial, and pressure relief benefits of this unique memory foam.

Comfort And Pressure Relief

Comfort and pressure relief generally go together, and it's not an exact science. What one person thinks is comfortable may not be what someone else thinks is comfortable.

For side and back sleepers, the Layla Hybrid mattress's soft side will be extremely comfortable, especially if you like a softer feel. You don't get sucked into the mattress, but instead, it contours around pressure points in your body like your hips and shoulders. This results in amazing pressure relief and overall comfort.

For stomach sleepers or those who like a firmer feel, the firm Side of this mattress will provide the support you're looking for. It still has some give, just enough to cradle pressure points, but not enough to overextend your back when you're sleeping on your stomach.

Edge Support

Layla Mattress Edge Support

Edge support is important if you have a smaller mattress and/or share your bed with a partner. If you have to sleep near the edge of the mattress, having great support along the edges a must.

Due to the thicker coils around the perimeter of this mattress, it has excellent edge support. You won't feel like you're about to fall off if you're sleeping near the side of this mattress.

If you sleep alone or have a larger size mattress like a King size, the support along the edge of a mattress isn't as important but is still an added bonus. What you see in the photo above is support along the edge on the soft side. The soft side will sink in slightly more than the firm side, but overall the edge support (even on the soft side) was quite good.

Firmness Options

As we mentioned before, the Layla Hybrid mattress has a soft side and a medium firm side. This makes the mattress incredibly versatile and a good fit for just about everyone (except if you and your partner drastically disagree on which firmness level you like.)

Let's break down the firmness levels by the side, starting with the soft side.

Soft side - 4-5/10:

The soft side of the Layla mattress is quite soft, with a lot of give. It comes in at around a 4-5/10, which makes it softer than an average mattress. However, since the copper-infused memory foam on the Layla mattress is bouncy, responsive, and cooling, you won't feel stuck or overheated when you sink into this side of the mattress. I'm mostly a side sleeper, and I LOVE the way this side of the Layla mattress feels. The soft side of the Layla mattress is my personal favorite, but it's nice that they give you both a soft side and firm side to choose from, unlike most other memory foam mattress companies out there.

Firm Side - 7/10:

Layla Sleep firm side firmness

The firm side of the Layla mattress has noticeably less give than the soft side (notice how less of the memory foam surrounding my hands sinks down when I press into the bed).  Unlike the soft side, it has a more traditional feel that's similar to an innerspring mattress with a support layer and a comfort layer added. If you're looking for an extra firm mattress with zero give, this firm side likely won't be firm enough, and you should look into something like a latex hybrid instead. This mattress's firm side is suitable for people who like firm or medium firm, but not for people who like extra firm.

Motion Isolation & Motion Transfer

Hybrid memory foam mattresses generally have more motion transfer than 100% memory foam mattresses do. This is because the coils in the center give the bed its bounce. With that being said, the motion isolation on the Layla Hybrid was impressive and is almost comparable to that of a traditional memory foam mattress.

Since the layers of foam surrounding the coils are thick and high quality, they do a great job isolating motion, due in part to the comfort and support layer above the coils. You'll still feel your partner get in and out of bed, but you likely won't be disturbed if they toss and turn a little at night. If you have a king size mattress or larger, the amount you'll notice movements of your partner will be even less since there's likely more space between you.

Temperature Control & Cooling

One of the most common complaints about a traditional memory foam mattress is how hot it gets. Old-school memory foam is terrible at dispersing heat. In fact, it traps heat around your body. The copper-infused foam from Layla is very different.

It's not only cool to the touch, but the foam actively helps dissipate heat while you sleep. If you combine this with the cooling cover and bundle a set of Layla's cooling bamboo sheets, you'll be fully set for a cool night's sleep, free of night sweats.

Who Is The Layla Hybrid Good For?

It's not often that we get to say that a mattress is good for just about everyone, but that's indeed how we feel about the Layla Hybrid mattress. There's only a small fraction of the population that won't find the Layla mattress comfortable. Here's a few examples of the types of people who will love the Layla Hybrid mattress.

Combination Sleepers, Side Sleepers, & Back Sleepers

Hot Sleepers

If you struggle with night sweats or live in an area that has harsh summers, it's worth it to invest in sleep products that help keep you cool. Everything about the Layla Hybrid mattress is designed to help regulate your temperature.

The cover is ultra-breathable and cool to the touch, the foam layers are copper-infused to help dissipate heat, and the coils help maximize airflow. Someone On The Fence About Buying a Mattress Online

Making such a big purchase online, especially something as personal as a mattress, can seem scary. The Layla Hybrid is a very safe bet. Since it's so universally comfortable, odds are, you're going to end up liking it. However, if you're still on the fence, remember that Layla offers a competitive 120-night sleep trial and a 10-year warranty.

You have just around four months to decide if you want to send the Layla mattress back for no reason other than personal preference. After that period, if anything goes wrong with the Layla mattress, you can rely on the 10-year warranty. (Click here to check the price of the Layla Hybrid)

Those Who Like Bounce AND Contour

If you like the way memory foam feels when you sink into it but don't like the way it feels when you sink too far and start to feel stuck, the Layla mattress has you covered.

Since it's a hybrid, you get the benefits of both a memory foam bed and an innerspring. You get the pleasant sink of memory foam and support foam combined with the responsive support from the coils. It's the best of both worlds.

Who Should Avoid The Layla Hybrid?

While the Layla mattress is suitable for most people, it's not suitable for all people. If you fall into any of these categories, don't buy the Layla Hybrid.

Strict Stomach Sleepers Who Like an Extra Firm Feel

If you sleep on your stomach, and only your stomach, and also happen to like an extra firm mattress, even the firm side of the Layla Hybrid may not be right for you.

While the firm side of the Layla Hybrid is indeed firmer than the soft side and generally considered "firm", it's still only a 7/10. If you're looking for an 8, 9, or 10/10 firmness mattress, look for something like an extra firm latex hybrid instead.

Trial, Warranty & Shipping

Buying anything online comes with a bit of hesitation. If you haven't bought a mattress in this decade, the idea of spending over $1000 on a mattress without getting to try it first can seem scary. This is normal!

While Layla mattresses aren't in showroom style stores, they do everything they can to make the purchase and trial process as easy and comfortable as possible.

120 Night Trial + Free Shipping

Most other mattress companies offer a 30-60 day trial period that may or may not offer free returns. They're betting on people not wanting to go through the hassle of having to pay to return a mattress.

Layla is different. They're so confident in their products that they're willing to ship the mattress to you for free, and if you end up not loving it, they'll help organize a pickup and return, free of charge.

Another awesome thing about Laylas shipping: they ship the mattress in a bag...WITH HANDLES. Normally mattresses come in a giant awkward to handle bed in a box. Layla went the extra mile to make the mattress much easier to handle during set up. It even has straps to wear it like a backpack if you're feeling adventurous.

Warranty

This Layla mattress review wouldn't be complete without touching on the warranty. Not all mattress companies offer a useable warranty on their products. Or, if they do, it's for a very short period of time. Layla provides a generous ten-year warranty on their mattresses.

Experts suggest that you should replace your mattress every 10-15 years, so for Layla to offer a warranty for essentially the mattress's projected lifetime says a lot. If you're unsure, always make sure to check Layla's website for specifics on their warranty since it can change at any time.

Closing Thoughts

The Layla Hybrid deserves all the praise you've probably heard about it already. It's truly an exceptional mattress that's built with quality and usability in mind. We hope this Layla mattress review helped you decide if this mattress is right for you or not.

If you're in the market for a mattress and don't fall into any of the categories of people who won't like the Layla, take a chance and give it a try. Side sleepers and back sleepers will love this mattress, side sleepers especially. If you find a discount on this mattress, don't wait. They aren't on sale often, and you should jump on any deals you see for this bed. You won't regret it!
