  • Great for side sleepers who have hip and shoulder pain
  • Bounces back quickly to avoid the "stuck" feeling most foam beds have

  • Could be too soft for stomach sleepers or heavyset people

Overall Thoughts:

Amerisleep has been around for over a decade, much longer than most other direct-to-consumer mattress companies out there. They have a history of making high quality sleep products for all price ranges. The AS5 and Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid are their premium mattresses designed for people who like a softer feel, but without that common "stuck" feeling you get with traditional foam.

Amerisleep build this mattress with their proprietary BioFoam, which is similar to memory foam, but is more responsive, cooler, and has anti-mold and mildew properties.

The mattress itself has a strong lower support layer, making it a great fit for platform bed frames. If you're in the market for a premium soft mattress that's built to last 20+ years, give this one a shot. If you don't like it, you have 100 days to send it back (free shipping both ways).

Zoma Mattress

What We Like

  • Stable and sturdy pocket coil base
  • Durable with a decade-long warranty
  • Sink and sag-resistant
  • Good for motion isolation

What We Don't Like

  • Individuals over 230 pounds may need firmer beds to maintain good posture

Overall Thoughts:

Zoma Sleep specializes in manufacturing sleep products meant to enhance muscle recovery in individuals with active lifestyles, and this hybrid model from Zoma is no exception. Like most hybrid mattresses, it features a responsive foam, a proprietary zoned foam layer, and coils. The mattress is encased in a soft and highly breathable mesh cover designed to enhance maximum air circulation at the very top of your bed.

Zoma Mattress' top surface comes with Triangulex Gel Memory Foam, which is zoned, meaning the center of the bed is firmer than the sections toward the foot and head. This is meant to make the sleep surface more supportive while you sleep on your back and stomach and more pressure-relieving when you're side sleeping. This gel-infused layer also features air channels for more breathability. So, if you're looking for the best gel mattresses that will keep your sleep surface cool all night long, Zoma beds might be an ideal pick.

Beneath that is a bouncy and responsive layer of proprietary Reactiv Foam that acts as a transition layer and adds more comfort to the top surface of your mattress. The bed has a stable and sturdy pocket coil base, making it a perfect fit for platform beds. Besides adding support to the mattress, these individually-wrapped coils leave room for airflow.

The Zoma Mattress has a 10-year warranty and a 100-night trial. This warranty is non-transferable and starts at the time of purchase.

Puffy Lux Hybrid Mattress

What We Like

  • Provides balanced support for all sleeping positions
  • Keeps cool and dry at night
  • Feels soft but supportive

What We Don't Like

  • Edges take time to fully expand, so initial edge support is mediocre

Overall Thoughts:

The Puffy Lux is considered by many to be one of the most comfortable mattresses out there. It's a 4 layer foam hybrid mattress that utilizes patent pending technology to delivery a comfortable, cool night's sleep. The mattress is encased in a removable, washable cover that zips on and off to wash easily.

The first foam layer of the mattress is a cooling cloud layer, where is where the patented technology comes in. The Cooling Cloud memory foam helps take heat away from your body as you sleep and delivers more effective airflow. This gel-infused foam offers 8x more airflow than standard foam.

The next layer is unique to the Lux model, and is a body adapting dual cloud foam. This is similar to the cooling cloud foam, but it offers a more advanced and customized temperature and humidity controls.

The final two layers are designed to provide core support so the mattress itself feels cushy on top, but still has deep, support for pressure relief and is 99% more responsive, and four times as supportive as a regular mattress.

Puffy also has a great selection of mattress toppers, sheets, pillows, foundations and more so you can bundle and get everything you need in one place.

this mattress is currently $300 off and comes with $455 worth of accessories included.

Plush Beds Cool Bliss Mattress

What We Like

  • Gel-infused foam is not only cool to the touch, but it also actively pulls heat away while you sleep
  • Super-flexible, making it great for all frame types including adjustable bases
  • Latex/foam construction gives you a floating feeling

What We Don't Like

  • Latex infusion makes the mattress heavy and will require 2 people to set it up

Overall Thoughts:

If you have issues with getting hot while you sleep, take a look at the Cool Bliss mattress by Plush Beds.

Gel-infusion is one of the best ways to make a mattress effective at staying cool. The is mattress takes the gel-foam idea a step further. Their gel-foam uses patented technology to dissipate heat 3x faster than other gel-foam mattresses while also providing great pressure relief and breathability.

The mattress itself is made up of 5 layers. The first is a cool-to-the-touch cover that gives you that "other side of the pillow" cool type of feeling. The second layer is the cooling gel foam that helps dissipate heat throughout the night while you sleep. The 3rd layer, and what makes this mattress unique is a layer of latex. Not many hybrid mattresses use latex because its a pricier material. However, the latex ensures the mattress won't sink over time and adds a layer of support. The 4th layer is a 2in airflow layer that provides built in ventilation to channeling heat away from your body. The final layer is a 5" supportive core that gives the mattress it's sturdy and supportive feel.

This mattress also works great for a platform bed, so long as the platform it's on is sturdy enough to support its weight.

Purple Hybrid Mattress

What We Like

  • Unique grid design provides a unique supporting/floating feeling
  • Keeps you cooler than almost any other mattress
  • Lasts longer than a traditional mattress

What We Don't Like

  • Lightweight sleepers won't be heavy enough to activate the grid, so the bed may feel firm to people under 120 lbs

Overall Thoughts:

If you've never seen a Purple mattress before, give them a look. Their design is incredibly innovative and the only thing like it on the market.

Hot sleepers love this mattress. It's unique grid design does an excellent job of keeping great airflow throughout the night, and helps disperse your body heat while you sleep.

The support it provides is well balanced enough for any sleeping position; which makes it ideal for couples that sleep in different positions. The grid design contours to your body, providing a cradling support that almost feels like you're floating.

The Purple hybrid is made of a combination of the purple grid, foam, and coils. The first layer of this mattress is the 2" purple grid. This is what provides the soft yet supportive feeling that makes purple unique. The next layer is a transitional foam, leading to a coil core. The coils help provide extra support, and extend the life of your mattress. After that, theres another layer of transition foam followed by a cover. This unique design gives you the benefits of the purple grid, and the benefits of a hybrid, coil-core mattress.

Overall, Purple is a high quality brand that's known for making high quality products, and this mattress is a safe bet for all types of bed frames, including a platform bed. If you want to learn more about this bed, check out the full review.

Casper Sleep Essential Mattress

What We Like

  • Fits perfectly on nearly any platform bed
  • Easy to clean with zipping off the cover
  • Fast and easy setup
  • Great pressure relief

What We Don't Like

  • Some people, especially heavier people, may prefer a thicker bed

Overall Thoughts:

This Casper mattress gives you awesome comfort without any hassle, and it’s easy to set it up too. Just unbox it and watch it inflate, then, get ready for the best sleep ever. It fits well on a platform bed. While some platform beds can take a ton of weight, not all of them can. That’s where this mattress stands out: it fits perfectly on platform beds, even when they have one of the lowest weight limits.

You still have plenty of pad and support under you, however. The cover is soft, and it’s easy to zip on and off and not all mattresses have removable covers. That means it’s even easier to clean and take care of, which is a huge bonus.

The Casper original mattress is a full memory foam mattress, but there are other hybrid options that would work well on a platform bed frame. The Casper original mattress has zoned support to help with proper spinal alignment. The softer foam that can be found around the shoulders is great for pressure relief on the upper body. The middle section, around your hips, waist, and lower lower back has a firmer memory foam that helps keep your spine aligned while you sleep. They follow up with a 3rd zone around your feet that's a softer foam again.

This zoned support is part of what makes the Casper mattress unique, and for the price range, it's one of the best deals out there right now.

Zinus 12 Inch Memory Foam Mattress

What We Like

  • Very durable and includes a 10-year warranty
  • Green tea extract keeps it fresh
  • The very affordable price point

What We Don't Like

  • May get too warm for hot sleepers

Overall Thoughts:

While you might be skeptical about getting a great mattress at such a budget conscious price, this is a mattress that will erase your doubts. When you lay on it, you can feel the tension start to ease off your pressure points, and you’ll have trouble getting up in the morning! There’s even a layer in the mattress specifically designed to take care of all your problem pressure spots.

This mattress is primarily memory foam, but with a few key things to make note of. First, the memory foam is infused with green tea which helps eliminate odors and has minor anti bacterial properties. This is great if you're worried about odors in the long term. It's also infused with active charcoal that help to absorb moisture which is great if you tend to sweat in your sleep and need a mattress that works with you, not against you.

This memory foam mattress is without a doubt the most budget conscious choice on this list, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great choice in its own right. It may not have the longevity of more expensive mattresses, but for what you pay, you get a great mattress for a decent amount of time (10 year warranty).

Live and Sleep Queen Mattress

What We Like

  • Designed for all bed frame types, box springs and platform beds
  • Easy cleaning and maintenance
  • Supports all sleeping positions

What We Don't Like

  • Gets somewhat warm overnight

Overall Thoughts:

One of the best things about the Live and Sleep mattress is how well it handles back pain. If you’re constantly tossing and turning trying to get comfortable, you’re going to love this mattress. It’s designed to contour to your body in just the right way, to help reduce the need to keep rolling over. No matter whether you’re a stomach sleeper, side sleeper, back sleeper, or a combination of those positions, you can get comfortable support.

It’s easy to take care of too. Unlike most mattresses, you don’t have to worry about marking your calendar to remember to flip it. You don’t have to flip it at all. It’s easy to keep fresh and clean too since you can just take the cover off and toss it in the washing machine. It fits not only on a platform bed, but also box springs and most standard bed frame options.

This is a great overall mattress for multiple sleeping positions, and if you value an easy to clean mattress that will last a while.

Perfect Cloud Elegance 12-Inch Memory Foam Mattress

What We Like

  • Keeps you cool through the night
  • Retains the same level of comfort for years
  • Balanced comfort thats soft yet supportive

What We Don't Like

  • Better to set up with two people

Overall Thoughts:

If you’re a really hot sleeper with a platform bed, you’ve probably had a real struggle finding the right mattress. The Perfect Cloud mattress is designed to stay as cool as possible throughout the entire night. While a lot of mattresses ‘sleep cool’ what they may mean is that they keep more of neutral temperature. This mattress is more akin to flipping your pillow over to the cool side, which is to say, it’s a huge relief.

It has the feel of balanced comfort. You can tell there’s a good amount of support beneath you, but without feeling the hard layers that provide it. Even better, it gives you comfort that lasts; years down the line, you can count on it to feel the same as when you first slept on it.

What is a Platform Bed?

Platform beds don’t look much different from a traditional bed. However, you don’t have to use a box spring as you might with other beds. Instead, metal or wood slats form the base that holds the mattress. These slats can usually be easily removed and adjusted as needed.

The way to tell a platform bed frame is by looking at it. A normal bed frame is raised along the side, and likely requires that you use a box spring. This is true whether you have an innerspring mattress, a memory foam mattress, or any other type of mattress. Platform bed frames are generally less expensive, but of a lesser quality.

If you're sure that you have a platform bed, it's time to start talking about the types of mattresses you can use on them, and what the best mattresses are overall to choose.

Different Types of Mattresses

Latex Mattresses

A latex mattress can be fairly heavy, but you can usually use them with platform beds as long as you keep the wooden slats on your bed closer together. Many people choose latex mattresses because they keep allergens at bay. Latex is a premium mattress material and can help you make sure that you're getting the best possible sleep. They generally last a very long time (12-40 years on average), but will cost much more, but don't require a box spring.

Innerspring Mattresses

Where latex mattresses are fairly new, innerspring mattresses are one of the types of mattresses that have been around the longest. If you’ve ever slept on a bed, chances are you’ve slept on an innerspring mattress.

These have a springy feel because there are coils packed within the mattress. If you’re looking at one for a platform bed, make sure it doesn’t require a box spring beneath first.

Innerspring mattresses are generally considered to be the "budget" choice, although some memory foam options may be less expensive than some innerspring mattresses. Memory foam has a more natural, soft support, whereas innerspring mattresses tend to have a firmer feel.

Memory Foam & Cooling Gel Mattresses

Many people are pretty familiar with high density memory foam mattresses. They’re known for contouring whenever pressure is placed on their surface, but they can also have sinking problems without sufficient support. Just like with latex mattresses, you can typically work around this by keeping the slats of your bed closer together (a few inches or less should be fine). You can also opt for a good mattress with cooling gel. The cooling gel design is often paired with memory foam and helps keep you cool throughout the night, with adequate support and comfort regardless of your body weight.

Memory foam is one of the most popular mattress materials today, and for good reason. Most people find memory foam mattresses to be incredibly comfortable, and you could argue that the best mattresses overall are made of memory foam. When it comes to mattresses for platform beds, memory foam mattresses can be a great choice because they fit well, and offer an exceptional level of comfort.

Hybrid Mattress

A hybrid mattress combines two different or more types of mattress materials. What they combine can vary, whether it’s latex and high density memory foam, regular memory foam and coils, or any other combination. Many people like a hybrid mattress, because they can get the benefits of multiple mattress types.

Hybrid mattresses are my personal favorite, and are great mattresses for platform bed frames. No one mattress material is perfect, so by opting for a hybrid, you get to take advantage of all of the benefits of each mattress material. A hybrid mattress is likely a combo of springs and foam, and some may include gel as well. The memory foam gives you a soft feel, where the coils help extend the life of the mattress, and provide you with deep support that you can't get from memory foam alone.

More Features to Look For When Shopping For a Bed Online

Make sure the mattress you’re looking at purchasing is suitable for a platform bed. Many mattresses are, but there are plenty that isn’t, and there’s no harm in checking. There's more than just one thing to look for when shopping for a bed. If your aim is to take your sleep seriously, theres at least two or three things to consider. For a mattress enthusiast like myself, I like to consider a handful of things when judging a mattress.

Trial Periods and Warranty

Always look for a mattress with a good trial period and a long warranty. A mattress with a solid trial period and warranty means the company making the mattress has confidence in their product. They're willing to let you try out the mattress and return it if you don't like it. If you see a mattress that you're interested in (especially a lower quality memory foam mattress that doesn't offer a trial or warranty, stay away.

Thickness & Support

The longevity of the comfort levels relies on support support support! A thicker bed may not always have more support, and it may not always be more comfortable.

Thicker mattresses generally have more layers, but this isn't always the case. The best mattresses for platform beds should be at least 12 inches thick, but up to 14 inches is even better. The thickness of a mattress often depends on the number of different layers, but for less expensive mattresses, it could simply just be the cut of the material. Either way, the thicker the mattress, the longer it will last and the less chance you have of it sinking in over time. One other thing to note about thickness is its correlation with support. A thick mattress is going to have more support than a thin mattress, and ultimately provide you with more comfort throughout the night.

A bed that can handle the weight of your body is critical for comfort and support, and an overall good nights sleep. Latex, foam, innerspring, or a combination will have the features needed for restful sleep if the mattress is thick enough.

Temperature Regulation

Temperature regulation is one of those things that people tend to overlook when shopping for a mattress, especially online. People tend to focus on the way it feels when you first get on it, not how it feels after you've been laying in it all night. Just like when shopping for the best bunk bed mattresses, you want to ensure that you pick a mattress that will deliver a cool and sweat-free sleep experience night after night. Materials like pure memory foam are known for being hot, so look for a gel hybrid if you go for a foam mattress to get the best night's sleep.

Late is one of the best standalone materials for temperature regulation, and foam being one of the worst. If staying cool all night is a top priority for you, opt for either a hybrid, or a latex mattress and try to stay away from anything thats full foam.

16 thoughts on “Best Mattress For Platform Bed – Types of Platform Bed Mattresses & Bed Reviews”

    1. Hey Jasmine, it depends on the mattress company, but generally speaking, a mattress should last at least 10 years before you should be shopping for another one.

  1. All the mattresses look beautiful and comfortable. It will be very difficult for any buyer to make a selection. Plush Beds Cool Bliss – I really like the mattress but you wrote in the review that the mattress is heavy, so the mattress needs a strong bed. Which of these mattresses do you personally think will be the most accessible and durable?

    1. The Plush Beds Cool bliss is a great choice overall! Yes, it is a bit on the heavy side, but most bed frames are able to handle the weight. If you’re looking at a larger size, like a split king, california king, or a regular king, see if you can find out how much weight your platform frame can hold just to be safe.

  2. I will personally recommend the Perfect Cloud Elegance 12-Inch Memory Foam mattress because I have received positive comments from others about this mattress. The benefits of the mattress are clearly stated in the “What We Like” paragraph. I hope the writer of this article will agree with my opinion.

    1. I would agree James, it’s a great mattress and I’m glad you had a positive experience with it.

    1. Hybrids will definitely last long since the core of a hybrid is generally made of sturdy coil. All foams are generally a budget friendly option in our opinion. If you go for all foam, make sure the company has at least a 10 year warranty backing the product.

  3. I really appreciate this article. I’ve been debating on a new mattress as me and my partner just moved in together. It’s perfect for me, but she is on the heavier side where I am very skinny. Do you think that the Hybrid Mattresses do best for both body types? Or what kind of mattress would you suggest that works best for two different people?

    1. Hey Heather, a hybrid is actually an excellent choice for that setup. An all foam mattress would likely compress on the side of the bed with the heavier sleeper, whereas a hybrid will hold its shape due to the coil-core construction most of them have.

  4. Hey, I have accessibility issues so mattress height is always a big issue for me, I really like the Idle Hybrid Mattress, but it does seem kind of a thick/high mattress. Is it as high as it seems or do you know what kind of mattress would be best for me? I really do like the hybrid mattress.

    1. Hey Hannah, the Idle Hybrid is a pretty standard height mattress. I would suggest you look into lower to the ground platform bed bases, rather than trying to find a thinner mattress. A thinner mattress won’t provide enough support for most people.

  5. I’m not an expert in beds and mattresses, so would really appreciate guidance in making a well-informed choice for a mattress for a condo I newly bought. I promised myself I’ll buy a good mattress so I get a peaceful night sleep every night, haha! What would you suggest for a mattress that isn’t too firm and isn’t too soft either, in Goldilocks terms “just right” and durable enough to at least last me a good 10 years. I’m guessing the Idle Sleep Hybrid would fit the bill but perhaps there are other choices I can consider? Thank you so much in advance!

  6. Howdy! For as long as I can remember, I’ve slept on as firm a mattress as I can find, and with a thick sheet of plywood between the mattress and boxspring. I’m probably considered a pretty hot sleeper (I sleep with air at 68 or 69, PLUS 2 fans every night). I’m considering making the switch to a platform bed! Not specifically from this list, are there any you would recommend for this single mom on a tight budget? Thanks so much for all this great info!!

    1. Hey Krystal, I would say your best bet would be to go into a store, test out to see what you like then try to buy online. You can almost always get a better deal going direct from manufacturer to consumer but it sounds like you need to feel for yourself whats best. Anything rated firm or extra firm would be a good fit, as long as its not a low-quality latex that might be too heavy for a platform bed.
