A platform bed is a lightweight, convenient way to add sleek looking furniture to your bedroom. Unfortunately, not all mattresses were designed to work well with this style of bed. Plush Beds Cool Bliss

What We Like

  • Gel-infused foam is not only cool to the touch, but it also actively pulls heat away while you sleep
  • Green tea infused memory foamSuper-flexible, making it great for all frame types including adjustable bases
  • Latex/foam construction gives you a floating feeling

What We Don't Like

  • Latex infusion makes the mattress heavy and will require 2 people to set it up

Overall Thoughts:

If you have issues with getting hot while you sleep, take a look at the Cool Bliss mattress by PlushBeds.

Gel-infusion is one of the best ways to make a mattress effective at staying cool. This mattress takes the gel-foam idea a step further. Their gel-foam uses patented technology to dissipate heat 3x faster than other gel-foam mattresses while also providing great pressure relief and breathability.

Sleeping on the PlushBeds Cool Bliss, we were not disappointed. It stayed mostly cool throughout the night and didn't make us overheat or sweat. The mattress itself is made up of 5 layers. The first is a cool-to-the-touch cover that gave me that "other side of the pillow" cool type of feeling. The second layer is the cooling gel foam that helped dissipate heat throughout the night while I slept.

The 3rd layer, and what makes this mattress unique is a layer of latex. Not many hybrid mattresses use latex because it's a pricier material. However, the latex ensures the mattress won't sink over time and adds a layer of support. The 4th layer is a 2in airflow layer that provides built-in ventilation to channeling heat away from your body. The final layer is a 5" supportive core that gives the mattress its sturdy and supportive feel.

This mattress also works great for a platform bed, so long as the platform it's on is sturdy enough to support its weight. It's GOTS, GOLS, and CertiPUR-US certified, meaning you can rest assured your sleep surface has no off-putting smells or irritants. Each product comes with a 25-year warranty and a 100-night sleep trial period. After the first 30 days of the trial, you may return your bed for a full refund, less a $149 transportation fee. Shipping is free throughout the contiguous United States and their queen mattresses go for approximately $3,155.

 Amerisleep AS5

What We Like

  • Ultra soft and ultra responsive cooling foam
  • Open cell design wicks away warm air while you sleep
  • Great for side sleepers who have hip and shoulder pain
  • Bounces back quickly to avoid the "stuck" feeling most foam beds have
  • Dust mite, mold and mildew resistant

What We Don't Like

  • Could be too soft for stomach sleepers or heavyset people

Overall Thoughts:

Amerisleep has been around for over a decade, much longer than most other direct-to-consumer mattress companies out there. They have a history of making high quality sleep products for all price ranges. The AS5 is a premium mattress designed for people who like a softer feel, but without that common "stuck" feeling you get with traditional foam.

Amerisleep built this mattress with their proprietary BioFoam, which is similar to memory foam. However, during our testing, we found it to be responsive, cooler, and has anti-mold and mildew properties. The plant-based Bio-Pur foam kept us cool all night long. Its open-cell design allowed more air to circulate throughout the bed than traditional foam. It's also resistant to mold, dust mites, and mildew and made without toxic chemicals.

I felt well supported while sleeping on my back on the AS5. While this is a very soft bed, it features an Active Flex foam layer that adds extra body support to the surface. The mattress itself has a strong lower support layer, making it a great fit for platform bed frames. Not surprisingly, I found this mattress also a perfect fit for side sleeping. I sank into the thick foam layers and felt pressure melting away around my hips and shoulders.

If you're in the market for a premium soft mattress that's built to last 20+ years, give this one a shot. All you need is about $2,350 for the queen-size mattress. It comes with a 100-night sleep trial period and free shipping and returns. If you don't like it, you have 100 days to send it back.

Zoma Hybrid Mattress

What We Like

  • Stable and sturdy pocket coil base
  • Durable with a decade-long warranty
  • Sink and sag-resistant
  • Good for motion isolation

What We Don't Like

  • Individuals over 230 pounds may need firmer beds to maintain good posture

Overall Thoughts:

Zoma Sleep specializes in manufacturing sleep products meant to enhance muscle recovery in individuals with active lifestyles, and this hybrid model from Zoma is no exception. Like most hybrid mattresses, it features a responsive foam, a proprietary zoned foam layer, and coils. The mattress is encased in a soft and highly breathable mesh cover designed to enhance maximum air circulation at the very top of your bed.

In our experience, this hybrid bed feels like a 7/10, meaning it's a bit firmer-than-average. Zoma Mattress' top surface comes with Triangulex Gel Memory Foam, which is zoned, meaning the center of the bed is firmer than the sections toward the foot and head. This made the sleep surface more supportive while sleeping on our back and stomach and more pressure-relieving when we were side sleeping.

However, the mattress wasn't supportive enough for us while stomach sleeping. We could feel our midsection bowing into the surface, and we needed some more overall support.

This gel-infused layer also features air channels for more breathability. So, if you're looking for the best gel mattresses that will keep your sleep surface cool all night long, Zoma beds might be an ideal pick.

Beneath that is a bouncy and responsive layer of proprietary Reactiv Foam that acts as a transition layer and adds more comfort to the top surface of your mattress. The bed has a stable and sturdy pocket coil base, making it a perfect fit for platform beds. Besides adding support to the mattress, these individually-wrapped coils leave room for airflow, which made us sleep cool throughout the night.

The Zoma Mattress has a 10-year warranty and a 100-night trial. This warranty is non-transferable and starts at the time of purchase. Its price ranges from $999 to $1,149 for the queen mattress. Plus, Zoma offers free shipping and returns for their hybrid mattress. Shoppers who don't totally love their bed after 30 nights can return it for a full refund.

Puffy Lux Mattress

What We Like

  • Provides balanced support for all sleeping positions
  • Keeps cool and dry at night
  • Feels soft but supportive

What We Don't Like

  • Edges take time to fully expand, so initial edge support is mediocre

Overall Thoughts:

The Puffy Lux is considered by many to be one of the most comfortable mattresses out there. It's a 4 layer foam hybrid mattress that utilizes patent technology to deliver a comfortable, cool night's sleep. The mattress is encased in a removable, washable cover that zips on and off to wash easily.

We ranked the Puffy Lux Mattress at a 6.5/10, meaning it's around the standard medium firm. The first foam layer of the mattress is a cooling cloud layer, which is where the patented technology comes in. As a hot sleeper, the Cooling Cloud memory foam helped take heat away from my body all night long and delivered more effective airflow. This gel-infused foam offers 8x more airflow than standard foam.

The next layer is unique to the Lux model, and is a body adapting dual cloud foam. This is similar to the cooling cloud foam, but it offers a more advanced and customized temperature and humidity controls. While back sleeping on this mattress, we experienced a perfect balance of support and comfort. The foam layer on top provides excellent pressure relief, while the firmer layers beneath help support spinal alignment.

We also experienced excellent pressure relief while sleeping on our side. The multiple foam layers helped cradle our hips and shoulders.

The final two layers are designed to provide core support so the mattress itself feels cushy on top, but still has deep support for pressure relief and is 99% more responsive, and four times as supportive as a regular mattress. Puffy also has a great selection of mattress toppers, sheets, pillows, foundations and more so you can bundle and get everything you need in one place.

Puffy offers free shipping, a 101-night sleep trial period, and a lifetime warranty for their mattress. Expect to pay about $2,850 for a queen-size luxury bed. Customers who aren't convinced that the Puffy Lux Mattress is the best for them can return it for a full refund, risk-free. Read the full review

Purple Hybrid

What We Like

  • Unique grid design provides a unique supporting/floating feeling
  • Keeps you cooler than almost any other mattress
  • Lasts longer than a traditional mattress

What We Don't Like

  • Lightweight sleepers won't be heavy enough to activate the grid, so the bed may feel firm to people under 120 lbs

Overall Thoughts:

If you've never seen a Purple mattress before, give them a look. Their design is incredibly innovative and the only thing like it on the market.

As a hot sleeper I loved this mattress. While testing this bed, its unique grid design did an excellent job of keeping great airflow throughout the night, and helped disperse my body heat.

The support it provides is well balanced enough for any sleeping position; which makes it ideal for couples that sleep in different positions. The grid design contours to your body, providing a cradling support that almost feels like you're floating.

The Purple hybrid is made of a combination of the purple grid, foam, and coils. The first layer of this mattress is the 2" purple grid. This is what provides the soft yet supportive feeling that makes purple unique. It felt soft and squishy when we first touched it, but it offered excellent support after we applied pressure.

The next layer is a transitional foam, leading to a coil core. The coils help provide extra support, and extend the life of your mattress. After that, there's another layer of transition foam followed by a cover. This unique design gives you the benefits of the purple grid, and the benefits of a hybrid, coil-core mattress.

Overall, Purple is a high quality brand that's known for making high quality products, and this mattress is a safe bet for all types of bed frames, including a platform bed. Each mattress comes with a 100-night sleep trial and a 10-year limited warranty. Customers can return eligible beds for a full refund after trying them for 21 nights. Shipping is free throughout the contiguous United States and the queen-size model costs about $2,295.

Casper Original Mattress

What We Like

  • Fits perfectly on nearly any platform bed
  • Easy to clean with zipping off the cover
  • Fast and easy setup
  • Great pressure relief

What We Don't Like

  • Some people, especially heavier people, may prefer a thicker bed

Overall Thoughts:

This Casper mattress gave us awesome comfort without any hassle, and it was easy to set it up too. Just unbox it and watch it inflate, then get ready for the best sleep ever. It fits well on a platform bed. While some platform beds can take a ton of weight, not all of them can. That’s where this mattress stands out: it fits perfectly on platform beds, even when they have one of the lowest weight limits.

You still have plenty of pad and support under you, however. The cover is soft, and it’s easy to zip on and off and not all mattresses have removable covers. That means it’s even easier to clean and take care of, which is a huge bonus.

The Casper original mattress is a full memory foam mattress, but there are other hybrid options that would work well on a platform bed frame. All their foam materials are CertiPUR-US certified meaning they're designed without ozone-depleting chemicals. The Casper original mattress has zoned support to help with proper spinal alignment. The softer foam that can be found around the shoulders is great for pressure relief on the upper body. The middle section, around the hips, waist, and lower back has a firmer memory foam that helped keep my spine aligned while I slept. They follow up with a 3rd zone around your feet that's a softer foam again.

The Casper Original Bed felt like a great match when we slept on our back. Our hips sank into the top layer as the zoned support system delivered the lumbar system we needed. It also felt great when we slept on our side as the soft foam layer offered the pressure relief we needed.

This zoned support is part of what makes the Casper mattress unique, and for the price range, it's one of the best deals out there right now. Expect to pay approximately $1,300 for the queen-size mattress. Casper offers free, no contact delivery, 100-night risk-free trial, and a 10-year limited warranty.

Zinus 12 Inch Memory Foam Mattress

What We Like

  • Very durable and includes a 10-year warranty
  • Green tea extract keeps it fresh
  • The very affordable price point

What We Don't Like

  • May get too warm for hot sleepers

Overall Thoughts:

Many people are skeptical about getting cheaply priced mattresses - just like I am. In this case, the mattress exceeded my expectations. Once I lay on it, I could feel the tension start to ease off my pressure points, which made my mornings energetic! There’s even a layer in the mattress specifically designed to take care of all your problematic pressure spots.

This mattress is primarily memory foam, but with a few key things to make note of. First, the memory foam is infused with green tea which helps eliminate odors and has minor antibacterial properties. This is great if you're worried about odors in the long term. It's also infused with active charcoal that helps to absorb moisture which is great if you tend to sweat in your sleep and need a mattress that works with you, not against you.

The Zinus Memory Foam Mattress offers strict side sleepers excellent pressure relief around the hips and shoulders. I felt a pleasant balance of support and comfort while back sleeping on this memory foam mattress. The foam layers conformed to the unique curves of my body and the high density base layer delivered excellent lumbar support. However, I didn't get the much-needed hip support when I slept on my stomach. My hips bowed a bit into the top layer, which put strain around my lower back.

This memory foam mattress is without a doubt the most budget conscious choice on this list, but that doesn't mean it isn't a great choice in its own right. It may not have the longevity of more expensive mattresses, but for what you pay, you get a great mattress for a decent amount of time (10 year warranty). You'll also receive a 30-day return policy and a 20-year warranty against structural defects. You can purchase this affordable mattress for about $630 for the 12-inch queen-size mattress.

What We Like

  • Designed for all bed frame types, box springs and platform beds
  • Easy cleaning and maintenance
  • Supports all sleeping positionst

What We Don't Like

  • Gets somewhat warm overnight

Overall Thoughts:

One of the best things about the Live and Sleep mattress is how well it handles back pain. As I constantly toss and turn trying to get comfortable in bed, I ended up loving this mattress. It’s designed to contour to the body in just the right way, to help reduce the need to keep rolling over. Whether you’re a stomach sleeper, side sleeper, back sleeper, or a combination of those positions, you can get comfortable support.

While sleeping on our back, our weight was evenly distributed, so we didn't sink through the foam layer and it was able to relieve painful pressure points as intended. The Live and Sleep Queen Mattress is also ideal for stomach sleeping as we found it to be pretty supportive in this position.

It’s easy to take care of too. Unlike most mattresses, you don’t have to worry about marking your calendar to remember to flip it. You don’t have to flip it at all. It’s specially designed to contour to the unique shape of the body. It's easy to keep fresh and clean too since you can just take the cover off and toss it in the washing machine. It fits not only on a platform bed, but also box springs and most standard bed frame options.

This is a great overall mattress for multiple sleeping positions, and if you value an easy to clean mattress that will last a while. The foam materials inside every Live and Sleep are OEKO-TEX and CertiPUR-US certified which promotes a healthy and restorative sleep. Choosing a Budget Mattress And Protecting Your Investment

Believe it or not, mattresses are a vital part of our daily lives. They ensure whether or not we have a good night's sleep and wake up happy and well-rested. Purchasing a poor-quality mattress will have the opposite effect.

When many people first move out, they tend to buy an airbed or a cheap mattress with the full intentions of purchasing their "real" mattress later. However, the truth is that your mattress should be one of your top priorities. This is because you spend 7-8 hours using your mattress. It's for this reason that you should see it as an investment and own a mattress that is good quality. Thankfully, there are plenty of good options to choose from under $500 on the market these days.

What to Consider When Buying a Mattress

Here's the important stuff you need to know when buying a mattress online.

Do not rely on General Firmness Levels to Make a Mattress Selection

Some of the first terminologies that you will be exposed to when selecting a mattress are soft, medium, and firm. These terms refer to the firmness level of the mattress. While this can give you a general idea of what to expect for your mattress, there is a much better way to determine the right level of comfort for you.

For starters, you can look for indentation load deflection. This is an industry-standard that will help you buy a mattress. You will find it listed as the product's ILD.

In simple terms, the higher the mattress' ILD, the firmer the mattress will be. A general rule that you can use is if a mattress has an ILD of 12, it is very soft. On the other hand, if the mattress has an ILD of 50, it is very firm. This makes an ILD of 30 a good middle area. Remember that the ILD is not always listed on the mattress so you may have to contact customer service to find this information.

Durability

Assess the materials that your mattress is made of to get an idea of how long the mattress can last. Some materials are more durable than others, and this is why they are continually used in products. Keep in mind that the lower the quality of the materials are, the less durable the mattress is going to be.

Even though a lower-cost mattress may have a shorter lifespan, you still want it to last at least a good 6 years. Furthermore, many mattresses come with a limited warranty, so you will be unable to replace over time.

Support and Comfort

Even if you are limited by a lower budget, you can still find a mattress that provides both support and comfort. Support is how the mattress holds your body up and helps your spine align while you sleep. Comfort is how the bed feels to you while you sleep.

Comfort directly correlates with firmness. Each mattress is rated from 1-10 with the lower numbers representing softer beds. Although comfort preference differs according to the individual, many people prefer mattresses in the middle range from 5-7.

The top layer of the mattress is the layer for comfort. Underneath that is the support core. When these two layers are placed together, they will determine how comfortable the bed feels to you.

Consider the Differences in Cost That Each Size Will Have

It is no surprise the larger the bed, the more expensive it will be. Therefore, it is much easier to stay in a lower price range when you aim for a full or twin-sized bed. There are benefits for shopping for a smaller mattress.

Instead of spending extra money on a queen or king-sized bed, you will be able to spend money on the quality of the mattress instead, and not the size. Not to mention that you will need to factor in the cost of bed frames as well. Furthermore, it is also quite difficult to find a queen or king-sized mattress with excellent quality that does not go over your budget.

Types of Mattresses

No matter where you buy your mattress, you're going to come across the same overall types of mattresses. Here's a quick summary of common types of mattresses.

Memory Foam Mattress

You may have already heard of memory foam mattresses because they are very popular among both the young and old. This is because not only do they feel nice to sleep on, they are also recommended by medical practitioners for their ability to help those suffering from ailments such as back pain. The best memory foam mattresses are known to mold to the body and react well to body heat as well.

Latex Mattress

Latex mattresses come in three different forms: synthetic, natural, and blended. Latex material comes from the sap of a rubber tree and sits on the more expensive end of the spectrum. However, like memory foam, they are recommended by doctors because of the health benefits that come with using them.

Hybrid Mattress

Hybrid mattresses are the perfect choice for people who are unable to make up their minds about the type of mattress that they want. This is because it is a combination of an innerspring mattress with either latex or memory foam.

Conclusion

Picking a mattress is a very important task that should be taken seriously. With the array of choices available nowadays, you shouldn’t have a problem finding a great quality mattress for under $500.

16 thoughts on “Best Mattress For Platform Bed – Types of Platform Bed Mattresses & Bed Reviews”

    1. Hey Jasmine, it depends on the mattress company, but generally speaking, a mattress should last at least 10 years before you should be shopping for another one.

  1. All the mattresses look beautiful and comfortable. It will be very difficult for any buyer to make a selection. Plush Beds Cool Bliss – I really like the mattress but you wrote in the review that the mattress is heavy, so the mattress needs a strong bed. Which of these mattresses do you personally think will be the most accessible and durable?

    1. The Plush Beds Cool bliss is a great choice overall! Yes, it is a bit on the heavy side, but most bed frames are able to handle the weight. If you’re looking at a larger size, like a split king, california king, or a regular king, see if you can find out how much weight your platform frame can hold just to be safe.

  2. I will personally recommend the Perfect Cloud Elegance 12-Inch Memory Foam mattress because I have received positive comments from others about this mattress. The benefits of the mattress are clearly stated in the “What We Like” paragraph. I hope the writer of this article will agree with my opinion.

    1. I would agree James, it’s a great mattress and I’m glad you had a positive experience with it.

    1. Hybrids will definitely last long since the core of a hybrid is generally made of sturdy coil. All foams are generally a budget friendly option in our opinion. If you go for all foam, make sure the company has at least a 10 year warranty backing the product.

  3. I really appreciate this article. I’ve been debating on a new mattress as me and my partner just moved in together. It’s perfect for me, but she is on the heavier side where I am very skinny. Do you think that the Hybrid Mattresses do best for both body types? Or what kind of mattress would you suggest that works best for two different people?

    1. Hey Heather, a hybrid is actually an excellent choice for that setup. An all foam mattress would likely compress on the side of the bed with the heavier sleeper, whereas a hybrid will hold its shape due to the coil-core construction most of them have.

  4. Hey, I have accessibility issues so mattress height is always a big issue for me, I really like the Idle Hybrid Mattress, but it does seem kind of a thick/high mattress. Is it as high as it seems or do you know what kind of mattress would be best for me? I really do like the hybrid mattress.

    1. Hey Hannah, the Idle Hybrid is a pretty standard height mattress. I would suggest you look into lower to the ground platform bed bases, rather than trying to find a thinner mattress. A thinner mattress won’t provide enough support for most people.

  5. I’m not an expert in beds and mattresses, so would really appreciate guidance in making a well-informed choice for a mattress for a condo I newly bought. I promised myself I’ll buy a good mattress so I get a peaceful night sleep every night, haha! What would you suggest for a mattress that isn’t too firm and isn’t too soft either, in Goldilocks terms “just right” and durable enough to at least last me a good 10 years. I’m guessing the Idle Sleep Hybrid would fit the bill but perhaps there are other choices I can consider? Thank you so much in advance!

  6. Howdy! For as long as I can remember, I’ve slept on as firm a mattress as I can find, and with a thick sheet of plywood between the mattress and boxspring. I’m probably considered a pretty hot sleeper (I sleep with air at 68 or 69, PLUS 2 fans every night). I’m considering making the switch to a platform bed! Not specifically from this list, are there any you would recommend for this single mom on a tight budget? Thanks so much for all this great info!!

    1. Hey Krystal, I would say your best bet would be to go into a store, test out to see what you like then try to buy online. You can almost always get a better deal going direct from manufacturer to consumer but it sounds like you need to feel for yourself whats best. Anything rated firm or extra firm would be a good fit, as long as its not a low-quality latex that might be too heavy for a platform bed.
