1. Amerisleep AS5 Hybrid - Best Soft Mattress For Adjustable Bed

Amerisleep AS5 Adjustbale

What We Like

  • Super soft, with excellent pressure relief
  • Open cell design helps keep you cool all night by wicking away warm air
  • Much more breathable than traditional memory foam
  • Coil core helps extend the life of the mattress
  • Resistant to dust mites, mold and mildew

What We Don't Like

  • Could be too soft if you prefer a medium-firm or firm feel

Overall Thoughts:

Amerisleep is a company that's been making sleep products for over a decade; much longer than most other direct-to-consumer mattress companies. They have a reputation for producting quality products, and the Amerisleep AS5 hybrid is their premium mattress that happens to also work great on an adjustable bed frame.

This hybrid mattress is soft yet supportive and does a great job relieving pressure, especially if you're a back or side sleeper. It's made out of a proprietary foam that's similar to memory foam, but it sleeps much cooler, and is far more responsive. You won't feel stuck in this mattress, instead your pressure points (like hips and shoulders) will sink into the mattress, while areas like your lower back and legs will have a soft support.

One of the biggest issues with memory foam is how hot it gets. This mattress is made of a cooling foam with a cover that actively wicks away heat from your body throughout the night. You can expect to feel contoured support while remaining cool all night.

What We Like

  • Unique "bounce" layer prevents the common stuck feeling you get with all-foam beds
  • Multiple layers designed to keep you cool
  • Flexible and strong enough for an adjustable base
  • Excellent US-based customer service

What We Don't Like

  • Higher price point due to premium materials may make it too expensive for some people

Overall Thoughts:

This 13" all foam mattress is luxurious in all regards. It's flexible and durable enough to be used with an adjustable base, but doesn't compromise on comfort.

This mattress has 7 layers, 4 of which have cooling properties. If you sleep hot, this is the mattress for you. Not only is it cool to the touch due to the ice fabric cover, but the top layers beneath that cover help take heat away from your body while you sleep.

This mattress falls right in the middle of the firmness scale at about a 5/6-10, making it a great fit for just about everyone but strict stomach sleepers who would likely prefer a firmer feel.

GhostBed also offers a generous 101 night trial, but does require you break in the mattress for 30 days before starting the return process. This is a realistic and honest approach, since most people who upgrade their mattress need that time to get used to the feeling. This mattress is a safe bet if you like a softer feel and have an adjustable base. This mattress feels extra luxurious because it's made with a 500GSM top layer, which, in essence, means the fabric is thicker and more comfortably than lower GSM fabrics. It's like buying a $50 shirt vs a $1 shirt, the fabric just feels higher quality because it's thicker.

It's a euro top/pillow top design that's whose primary purpose is to regulate body temperature. The first layer of this mattress is 2 inches of a quilted pillow top, the next layer is 2 inches of Nolahs AirformICE. This foam layer adds incredible pressure relief and cooling features.

If you're looking for a hybrid mattress that feels more like a traditional mattress, but with a huge upgrade, the Nolah Evolution Hybrid is an excellent choice. It comes with free shipping and an impressive lifetime warranty. Nolah really stands behind their products and has a reputation for excellent customer service.

Different Types of Mattresses For Adjustable Beds

Luckily when it comes to finding mattresses and adjustable base, you have a lot of options as far as types and materials. Based on your personal preferences and sleeping style, you can decide which one will be most suitable for you. When you're shopping for a mattress online, you want to make sure it has a decent sleep trial period, and at least a 5 year warranty.

Latex Mattresses & Adjustable Bed Bases

Latex mattresses are quite similar to memory foam in terms of feel, although it is a bit more bouncy. However, it’s more durable and can be a more eco-friendly alternative, if you choose natural latex. If you do end up choosing natural latex it will be much more sturdy and long-lasting than synthetic. Latex is also great for pressure relief. The latex itself is cooler than memory foam and offers the same, and sometimes better pressure relief.

Memory Foam Mattresses & Adjustable Bed Bases

Memory foam mattresses are known for conforming to your body’s shape and relieving pressure. Your body will sink into the memory foam for supported sleep. This material used in layers of different densities to create a softer or medium firm to firm feel.

Innerspring Mattresses & Adjustable Bed Bases

Innerspring mattresses are a more traditional style of mattress that’s constructed of innerspring coils and a pillow top surface. These mattresses are known to create more pressure points due to the coils. These types of innerspring mattresses go well with any bed base. However, when you're looking for mattresses for an adjustable base, generally a foam or hybrid is best.

Hybrid Mattresses & Adjustable Bed Bases

The best choice for adjustable beds are generally hybrids. A hybrid bed is built using a combination of material and can be used with just about any bed base. Typically a combination of coils and foam or latex. People like that they can get the bounce of the coils and the supportive conforming of the latex or foam.

Qualities to Consider With Mattresses For An Adjustable Base

Knowing what to look for in a mattress for your adjustable bed base can help you make the best decision. Here are three things to consider when shopping for this type of adjustable bed:

When we're talking about adjustable bases or an adjustable bed, you don’t want the mattress to be too thick. On the other hand, you don’t want to compromise comfort for a thinner mattress. Look for a mattress between 8 to 12” thick - this will be just the right amount of support and thin enough to still be adjusted. The best mattress for an adjustable bed is somewhere in the mid-range of thickness and offer comfort and support.

Size & Feel

The measurements on adjustable beds can vary slightly compared to normal bed frames. Be sure that the mattress you choose will fit the bed frame properly. It’s a real pain to have to return or exchange a mattress, especially one that has support and comfort properties you like.

Durability of The Adjustable Bed

Adjustable beds are moving a lot more than a traditional bed frame and need to maintain their comfort level. Because of this, adjustable beds need a mattress that is built with high quality, durable materials that will be able to withstand the bending and pressure. You must ensure that the bed can remain completely flush with the base even when the head or foot of the bed is completely raised. Go for a mattress that has at least a 10-year warranty, and uses premium materials such as an organic cotton cover. The best mattress for adjustable beds should last for years to come and be easy to clean and get the most out of.

Sleep Trial and Warranty

Buying a mattress online can be scary, especially one for an adjustable bed frame. When you go with a company that gives an aggressive sleep trial and at least a 5 year warranty, you can literally rest easy knowing your comfort is protected. Not all lower quality mattresses will offer a sleep trial, or the sleep trial may be voided by simply removing the mattress tag. Mattresses that comes with a good warranty should give you peace of mind.

When shopping for a mattress, look for at least a 5 year warranty, but also be aware that a 10 year warranty is the industry standard. Anyone willing to have a 10 year warranty stands behind their products. Those who don't offer a warranty, or have a short warranty should be approached with caution, because they probably aren't using premium materials.

When it comes to industry standard for the amount of night sleep trial you should be looking for, most give a 365 night sleep trial of less. Anything under a 20 night sleep trial should make you wary. Some lower quality mattresses don't want to give a long night sleep trial because they know their mattresses don't hold up as well over time.

Know Your Sleep Position

Your sleep position plays a huge role in picking out the ideal mattress for you, especially for adjustable bases. Side sleepers may need a different mattress than someone who sleeps on their back. Also, you should consider how often you use the adjustable part of your adjustable bed so you know if the materials will take more wear and tear over time. Adjustable bases tend to lower the life span of lower quality mattresses. Adjustable bases will stretch and compress the mattresses unlike a normal bed frame.

Side sleepers generally like a softer mattress, whereas stomach and back sleepers tend to like one thats a little more firm. Also note, if you have issues like acid reflux, adjustable bed bases can help prop you up to relief this, but only if you're a back sleeper. An adjustable bed can be used to ease your body while you're digesting and trying to get ready for bed if you rest on your back and use the bed to support your weight.

Overall, you're looking for comfort and support, and your sleep position determines if the best memory foam, hybrid, or latex mattress is the right choice.

The Difference Between Mattress For Adjustable Beds and Hospital Beds

A residential adjustable bed base and an adjustable bed base for hospitals are similar, but they aren't the same thing. Hospital beds are normally 6 inches of foam topped with a thick rubbery outer layer that can stand up to being aggressively cleaned and sanitized, but offer less support. Most hospital beds also rise up and down to help nurses be able to access patients, and customize the bed height for general safety. The mattresses on these types of beds are designed for utility and meeting the standards of patient comfort. These mattresses aren't designed to be an ideal of luxury and comfort and likely aren't made of a premium material like latex to support your back.

With an adjustable bed for your home, you get the benefits of being able to lift and lower you head and foot areas, without the surgical feel of the bedframes you see in a hospital. Good quality mattresses for adjustable beds are anywhere from 12 inches thick and above and use premium materials such as latex or organic cotton. These mattresses often come with at least a 10-year warranty, depending on the manufacturer.

An adjustable bed for residential use will move the head and foot areas as much as you want, but are often thicker, and nicer to look at. An adjustable bed that's use in a hospital often isn't nearly as comfortable, won't last as long, and looks dreadful. If they're they same size, they are about the same weight too.

There are so many great options out there when it comes to choosing a mattress for your adjustable bed. The perfect one for you will depend on your personal preferences and sleeping habits, but knowing what to look for is a great step to picking the perfect one. Mattresses have a lot to do with your sleep health so opting for the mattresses from brands that are backed by a good trial period and warranty can help. There are many different brands, and not all brands have their customers best interests at heart.

Adjustable beds are becoming a type that is more and more popular in people’s homes. They provide you with a completely customized sleep experience that can leave you feeling more rested and restored than you’ve ever felt. If you're in the market for a mattress for your adjustable bed and none of these types seem to fit, let us know in the comments section below and we can help you find the perfect mattress for your adjustable bed.

  1. I used to love a firm mattress when I was thin but since I’ve gotten quite a bit heavier I need a mattress hat is somewhat softer.
I have an adjustable base. What do you recommend?

  2. So here’s my thing. I always sleep on my back. I don’t move at all once I am asleep. I can fall asleep at once. For nearly 20 years I have slept on a couch. Can’t stand being in a bed. My ideal position is that of an outstretched recliner or zero gravity. Also I favor laying on the couch with the couch back on my right.
Taking the big step to start sleeping in a bed. Getting an adjustable base so what I need for a mattress is- least expensive, I will sacrifice quality/longevity, since I don’t expect to be adjusting it hardly ever; I need firmness as I sometimes have to roll myself out and grasp an anchor to pull out and up; I do not want any special cooling feature, I like it hot; it will be a twin XL; support for my weight between 130 and 150 lbs; and not concerned with allergy, environment, bounce, isolated movement, etc.
