If you truly have issues with keeping cool while you sleep, it doesn't matter what mattress you get, what sheets you use or how cool you keep your AC. Your bed is a microclimate. Your body radiates heat, and even the best phase change textiles can't absorb it all. The Eight Sleep Pod Pro is a step above any other cooling mattress for back and stomach sleepers we've seen before. This is a smart mattress that can actively cool down your bed while you sleep

The mattress is a medium firm all foam mattress. It's suitable for most people, especially stomach sleepers, but may be too firm for some lightweight sleepers, or those who like a softer memory foam feel. With that being said, it's a very comfortable mattress for most people. The mattress isn't what makes this bed amazing though -- it's the cover. If you're not sure whether you'd be comfortable with a soft or firm mattress, give the Eight Sleep Pod Pro a a try for the perfect balance.

The medium firm cooling mattress is encased in a smart cover that's app enabled which allows you to control your sleep temperature, track your sleep, set alarms, and get health checks and HRV data. The mattress comes with a "pod" which holds a small amount of water which is used to heat and cool the mattress. If you sleep with a partner, you can each have your own settings so keep your bed exactly how you like it.

Overall, if you're looking for a medium firm bed that's built with temperature regulation at the forefront, the Eight Sleep Pod Pro cooling memory foam mattress is a no-brainer.

The 3rd layer, and what makes this mattress unique is a layer of latex. Not many hybrid mattresses use latex and foam, most of them use individually wrapped coils. Overall Thoughts:

The Dreamfoam Copper Mattress is a hybrid bed that excels in multiple performance categories, including pressure point relief, proper spinal alignment, and back pain relief. Its strong motion isolation makes it an especially perfect fit for couples, and the plush surface caters to side sleepers.

The Dreamfoam Copper Mattress is wrapped in a smooth woven fabric cover to keep the surface temperature neutral and prevent overheating. Both the medium and firm models have the same materials and construction. A layer of memory foam conforms to the body and evenly distributes weight to relieve pressure buildup as the graphite and copper infusions draw excess heat away from the body to keep the surface cool. However, the firm version uses a slightly thinner memory foam layer to create a firmer feel.

Underneath the infused memory foam layer comes a second layer of foam, which relieves pressure and delivers a sinking, contouring feel. This layer is thinner on medium versions and thicker on firm ones for additional support. Both models feature a high-density transition layer that helps distribute weight across the sleep surface. This 2-inch layer also buffers the sleeper from the pocketed coil beneath it.

Lastly, you'll find a 6-inch coil system at the support core. Aside from giving the bed stability and some bounce, these coils promote airflow and help curb motion transfer.

Overall, the Dreamfoam Copper Dreams boasts a below-average price-point for a high-quality hybrid mattress. You get to pay about $950 for a queen-size model and only about $490 for twin sizes. Plus, your purchase comes with a 120-night sleep trial period and a 10-year warranty.

  • Breathable coil system combats body heat retention
  • Isolates motion fairly well
  • Made of quality materials

What We Don't Like

Plus, its adaptive foam layers are infused with cooling materials, which further help minimize heat buildup, making the Star Hybrid an ideal pick for side and back sleepers who sleep hot.

A polyfoam transition layer and a gel-infused Serene foam layer make up the Bear Star Hybrid's comfort system. The topmost layer adapts to the body's unique contours, evenly distributing weight and alleviating pressure around the hips, shoulders, and lower back. On the other hand, the transition layer enhances body cushioning while keeping the body from sinking into the pocketed coils. A cover made of Celliant fibers and HydroCool Phase Change Material encases the mattress. The Celliant fibers help the surface maintain a relaxed feel, while the Phase Change Material is designed to dissipate heat on contact, resulting in a mattress that sleeps cool at all times.

As a hybrid mattress, the Star Hybrid uses a pocketed coil system for stability. These coils are engineered to move independently from each other, creating a solid support core without generating too much motion transfer. They also help prevent deep sinkage when getting in or out of the mattress.

A price range of $970 - $2,080 puts the Star Hybrid's sticker price on par with average foam hybrid mattresses. Plus, Bear offers free ground shipping to shoppers living in the contiguous U.S. All mattresses are backed by a 120-night sleep trial and a lifetime warranty.

How A Cooling Mattress Works For Hot Sleepers

The best cooling mattress on the market is often pricey, but uses better materials. When doing mattress reviews, we often look for options that use the best quality materials at the best price. Cooling foam beds are designed for hot sleepers. Cooling mattresses are designed to support maximum airflow and breathability. They do this by way of open-cell foam. This specific type of foam includes small channels for airflow, keeping the mattress and the sleeper on top cool. Like some of the best cooling memory foam mattresses, this bed allows air to pass through it, cooling both its insides and surface.

It's important to note though, that the cooling abilities of the best mattresses in this category can be rendered useless. How? The problem comes in when they are covered with thick sheets, blankets, and other tight-fitting covers that prevent air from flowing. When air can't escape, heat gets trapped, preventing even the best value cooling mattress from doing its job.

Mattress Features To Keep in Mind for Hot Sleepers

Mattress firmness

When looking for the best materials and fillers, it is best to consider the weight—which the plastic or glass beads are responsible for—the interior and the exterior materials. And also if the weighted blanket is machine washable.

Remember, a temperature regulating feature isn't the only factor to consider when purchasing a new cooling bed. You also need to know whether to go for a firm, medium firm, or a softer mattress. That said, the firmness of your desired mattress should be one of the first things you think about during the browsing process. Generally, it’s rated on a 1-10 scale, with most memory foam mattresses falling somewhere between 3 and 8. Our mattress reviews include a variety of foam firmness levels.

Generally, softer mattresses feature more foam, hence tend to sleep warmer. On the other hand, firmer mattresses typically sleep cooler since they contain more supportive components, such as coils and latex. And if you yearn for the perfect balance, you'll never go wrong with a medium firm mattress.

The best mattresses that are rated 5 or below tend to be soft and prone to sinking, while 5 and above are on the harder side and better for total body support. In addition, if you have back or circulation problems, you may want to go for the best mattress for back pain with more structure instead of a pillow top bed that sucks you in every night. A majority of stomach sleepers and combination sleepers prefer a firmer mattress, as well.

As a rule of thumb, anytime that you’re “sucked in” to a mattress, you’ll be warmer while you sleep, as you’re confined within the mattress. This being said, firmer mattresses tend to be the most popular choice.

Bodyweight

Although not a factor of the mattress itself, body weight does need to be considered, and knowing about your body, and what you like is a sleepers best chance at getting a good night's sleep. The bodyweight of the sleeper will help dictate which kind of mattress is needed. For example, a 120-pound sleeper can get away with a relatively soft mattress, while a 240-pound sleeper should have something a bit harder.

Material

You’ve probably seen a variety of the best mattresses and products marketed as “cooling” - but are they? Our mattress reviews determined that some are, but not all of them are. However, some materials are better at regulating heat and airflow than others. Gel-infused foams and advanced memory foam that contains open cells and cooling gel beads are the two best cooling mattress materials.

Traditional memory foam, latex, and polyfoam are known to trap body heat at night. This is why it's important to read up on memory foam types before making a decision as large as purchasing a bed with cooling technology. This technology is also available in cooling pillows.

Price

It’s no secret that hot sleepers need a mattress with adequate cooling properties. However, these mattresses often come at a higher cost than traditional mattresses, which is something that needs to be kept in mind when shopping. You want a good mattress without breaking the bank.

Importance of A Good Mattress Cover

As we mentioned above, the cover that sits on top of your cooling mattress affects the way the mattress works. There are two main types of mattress covers: quilted and non-quilted.

Non-quilted covers are generally the best cooling mattress covers for hot sleepers. They’re thinner, smaller, and made up of less material that could potentially trap heat. Due to this, they’re good compliments to cooling mattresses.

Mattress covers that are made of thick, unbreathable material are not a good option. Instead of cooling you off, they will more than likely make you warmer. However, some covers are made with cooling technology. These covers are either woven with cool-inducing fabrics or phase changing materials that are designed to transfer excess heat away from the sleeper.

Mattress toppers can also play a role in how much cooling you feel. If you sleep very hot, stay away from mattress toppers, but instead opt for the best cooling mattress that helps you sleep cool, and has a soft enough top you don't feel the need to add mattress toppers. If you have a naturally high body temperature and struggle with temperature regulation, getting a mattress that helps you sleep cool can make a world of difference

Phase Change Material

Thermo-regulating products that promise to keep you cool use phase change materials (PCMs). They're increasingly popular, and are a go-to for hot sleepers. Like its name suggests, phase changing materials work by absorbing the heat you emit at night. A PCM will pull the heat away from your body and store it. As your body cools off, the phase change materials will release the heat. This allows you to stay temperature neutral all night long.

Even the best memory foam beds are not great unless they're made with a phase change material. Sometimes, if you take something like a latex mattress and add a cover with PCM, you get a wonderfully cool bed. However, if you add a PCM cover to a memory foam mattress, you won't get the same effect.

Cooling Sheets

If you have the best value cooling mattress already and are still having issues, it could be due to your sheets. After all, your sheets are what make direct contact with your skin. Even uniquely designed mattresses for hot sleepers won't be as effective if you're using the wrong sheets.

If you sleep hot, you should consider sheets made of a cooling material: bamboo, tencel, or percale. These materials offer much better breathability and active temperature regulating properties than standard cotton sheets. However, they are more expensive but are some of the best cooling accessories you can buy.

Having sheets that help control your body temperature is the absolute best top layer you can have on a mattress to help you stay cool throughout the night.

The Downfall of Memory Foam

Memory foam was extremely popular when it first came out for use in sleep products. Afterall, there was really nothing like it before. Traditional memory foam is not compatible with being a cooling mattress. Cooling mattresses almost always have a foam hybrid that may feel and act similar to memory foam, but is likely gel-infused, or having a proprietary blend of materials to achieve the end product of a cooling mattress. Some even come with a layer of cooling gel foam that aids in dissipating heat throughout the night.

Cooling mattresses don't trap heat in the same way that memory foam does. A gel memory foam cooling mattress should actively dissipate heat and help pull it away from your body in the process. If you have an all foam memory bed and you sleep hot, you may not even be a hot sleeper...you may just have traditional foam!

Upgrading to a new cooling mattress will go a long way towards helping you sleep cooler throughout the night.

What Is a Cooling Mattress?

Unlike a normal mattress, a mattress that's marketed as a cooling mattress will actively attempt to pull heat away from your body. The best cooling mattresses are great for all sleeper styles, including back sleepers, side sleepers, combination sleepers, and stomach sleepers. You can get a cooling mattress in all foam firmness levels, and it's becoming a standard in the mattress industry since most people tend to sleep hot unless you live in a very cold area.

These types of mattresses will help you regulate temperature with unique cooling properties that will vary from manufacturer to manufacturer. The best cooling mattresses will have multiple cooling foam layers, and some even have a cooling cover to help you sleep throughout the night.

If you're considering one, go with one that actively advertises that they help you sleep at a lower temperature. It's also a good choice to go with options for good airflow, and bundled with other cooling accessories.

Airflow vs. Cooling Materials

It's not enough to just have a mattress that's made of materials that stay cool to help you sleep. You also need to look for a bed that has good airflow to further help regular temperature and minimize heat retention. These are two of the most important factors when it comes to a cooling mattress, and the best ones should have a combination of both good airflow, and cooling materials. You can also opt for a cooling bed that features pocketed coils that allow warm air to pass through for easy breathability.

Conclusion

Cooling mattresses can be life changing for those that suffer nightly. For hot sleepers, they can mean the difference between a sweat-soaked pillow and a restful night's slumber. When purchasing a cooling mattress, it's a good idea to consider your budget, the mattress materials, your weight, and the mattress structure. It is also in your best interest to choose a good mattress top cover using our guidelines and suggestions.

Regardless of whether you have a cooling cover or not, though, it's safe to say that cooling mattresses do a great job of cooling you down when used correctly.
